The street coinuiit-sioner' was instructed to put a railing upon Sixth and Vine streets to prevent learns from running into the water ditch. Petition of Mark Hulbnrt and others for a new sidewalk on the east line of block 42 was referred to the committee on streets and public properly, with power to act in the matter. The committee to whom was re ferred the matter of electric street lights reported, recommending i hat lights lie placed at the follow ing locations: At the junctl n of Jefferson and Fifth streets ; at the junction of Washington and and Seventh streets: Ferry and Ninth ; Ellsworth ar.'i Second ; Vine and Ninth; Lafayette and Kighth; Main ami First. United States engineer, has gone to Coos hay to get the work st.irted on the goverrunpnt works there. Mr. I'olhemus, who has had chart;.' of the improvements at Yacjuin i lor several vears, has gone I" Coos bay to take charge there and Cap t tin Symons is going over to give him instructions as to what to do this winter. There is a wharf to be built and scows and material to be collected and contracts to be made, etc., which will occupy the greater part of the winter, and as soon as the weather ermits in the spring work will be begun on the jetties. ' Left for Parts I'nknown. Fred Votley, the man who was hot by Policeman McClain, has left the city. He had almost en tirely recovered from his wound, ami was to have Wgun work cook ing in the Franklin house ( Waver ly hotel) Sunday. Sunday morn ing, however, he arose very early, about 4 o'clock, got breakfast for himoelf, cat the same, and skipped for parts unknown. It is believed that he suspii-ioned that he would be arrested for some crime com mitted before he came to this city, as he always acted very ipieer. The case against. The effort to establish a new unty out of portions of Crook and Wasco counties is not meeting with mvrch success among the neavy tax-payers either in this or Wasco county. During the storms of last winter feed became very scarce and stock had to eat whatever came handy nails kegs, old rags, etc., and some even took on a supply of gravel for roughness. Albert Wilson killed a cow last Thursday that had evi dently wintered on a gravel pile, as he found about four liounds of rock in her stomach, but it had evident ly proven h althful diet, as the cow was fat and was excellent beef. If ranchers would cultivate a taste for gravel among their cattle they might save considerable woik in preparing feed, as rock aliotinds in this county. Tin people of this section had a little fore t a ne of winter lat week. The Monmouth Democrat has j changed bauds. Mr. Thomas Boothby is putting up a fine residence on his property in the southern part of town. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wolverton of Albany were here last week visiting Mr. Wolverton's parents Mr. and Mrs. John Wolverton. The free lecture on phrenology, by Prof. Vincent, in the college chapl Saturday evening, was well attended. The second term oi Oregon State Normal school, began last Monday with an increase of 20 new students. The total number now enrolled is 1!2. Mr. John Stump, while digging a wellon eis place one and a half miles west of Monmouth a short t me ago, struck, 12 feet below the surface, a layer of red piint 14 feet thick, which experts pronounce etial to any in the state. Petition for sidewalks in llausman's addi tion, Oak St. and Cedar street were granted, also a sidewalk ordered built to the city jail. F. M. Jacks and A. S. McDonald, were appointed judges of the city election, to take place on the third Monday in December. Different bills were allowed amounting to $!i.70. On Wednesday at 5:15 p. in., the whistle of No. 10 Locomotive, awoke the echoes of the valley, and informed the citizens of Brownsville that the broad guage was completed to that point, and the fust train under the new system had arrived, which means that Brownsville is now in close connection with the immense rail ways of the United States, and can ship or rt'uvivo lioight, produce, etc., w ithout extra charge or trans ferring. On Thursday morning all he narrow guage roiling stocks, remaining on this side was pushed forward toward Cobnrg, a large number of track layers, lollowing and widening the road in advance of the standard guage trains. On Thursd-ty at 4 p. in., the regular 5 P. in., train was derailed at Plainview, but aside I'roni the delay, no damage was done and at present writing the trains are milk ing their regular trips. Admission 10 cents. An Epidemic of Crime. Dayton Enterprise: Dayton's evil star seems to be in the ascend ency. Within the past two weeks the" vicinity has been shocked b. two murders, one suicide and an other attempt at suicide. It is singular how disas'ers seem to come in veries, one of the most remarkable instances being the reieated calamities that befell Johnstown. Pa.
