Jay Gould, who apeak s as one having not only authority hut a very thorough inaatery of the sub ject is a warm advocate of railroad consolidation among the great transportation agencies of the United States, He looks at the question from the stockholder's I oint of view, and he admits, and says that consolidation would per mit of a slight increase in rates which would enable railroad com panisa to pay dividends and make railroad stocks a desirable invest ment. That he is profoundly interested in the contributors to Mich divi dends neads not even assertion. Us may not be so brutally frank as Mr. Vanderbilt is reported to have been, bnt his concern for the people is probably no greater than that ol the man who summarized the rail load side of the question with "the public be damned." Gould favors the consolidation of railroads be cause it would cut off competition, reduce the expenses of superin tendence and prevent rate cutting, all of which would inure to the benefit of the holders of railroad stocks. in a business point of view much may be said for Mr. Gould's iucas. There la a great waste of force in our present system of carrying on railroads. Under proper arrange ments one man could do the work ol rive and do it better and more satisfactorily. A consolidated rail road, while it would require as u.any operatives as its component paits had previously required, would save money in the high salaried offices and would probabK be much better uianrged. But the corol ary of this proposi tion, the Ban Francitro Chronicle boldly asserts, cannot be over looked or misunderstood, If it be a desirable thing that the great .railroad should consolidate, it follow that it would be still more desirable, so far as the people are concerned, I hat all railroads should pass under one control and tha the control of the government of the United States. If combination can secure dividends for stock holders, governmental control would insure better and cheaper tervice for the people, since the government would have no object in making piotit out of the rail roads which it managed. Mr. Gould's gigantic consolidation may succeed, but if it uces it will cer tainly lie along step toward the railroad of the United States passing into the hands ami under the direct control of the federal government. Just what the demi-cratic majority in the house will do is a matter of as much anxiety to demo crats as to republicans. While the ex-Emperor of Brazil Dom Pedro, was attending the scientific lecture meetings at Paris the furniture in his former palace of Hon Vista was being sold at auction. Here are the prices paid at the auction for some pieces of the furniture: An armchair, having been used aa a throne, 720 mitrels; a bouquet of artificial flowers kept under a glass globe. 100 milrels ; a writing-desk belong ing to the 6x-Empress, 3,000 mil rels ; a prie Dieu, or praying-chair, 130 milrels; nine pieces, compos ing the whole furniture of the ex Emperor's room, 4,400 milrels; a cloth piano-eover,410 milrels; a Checkering square piano, 2,000 milrels. The Brazilian milrels is worth a little more than 50 cents ; thus the Imperial throne was sold for about $370, or about one-third the price obtained for the Ameri can piano. Plainly Secretary Proctor has felt the insinuating touch of the spirit of the age. His latest step is said to havecaused"quiteaetir" in the war department, but un doubtedly the secretary knows that he is right, and means to go ahead. He has caused the sale of the government horse used by one of the department messengers, and with the proceeds has pur chased a bicycle for the messenger to ride hereafter.
