The city election on Monday promises to be attended by no spirited contest nnleas it ia ior tbe treaaurersuip. The probable in crease in the business of that office next vear renders it a desir able plum in the politics of the city. It is conceded that the republi ca.is will nominate the present treasurer, F. L. Kenton, a hoevery body knows will be a mighty hard man to beat at the poll. The demo crats will, it is said, nominate either If. Farwell or Cal Burk- hart. In such a course is wisdom. I be question oi bondinir the city for $75,000 to be ex pended in the system of public improvements proposed has been voted on in the affirmative by the people, and what is needed is a council that will continue this work. By the nominations made last night good men were placed before the voters to be selected next Monday, and there is no question but that a nroirreaaive council will be elected for the next year. Tbe Orcg-oalao Lisa, The papers transferring the Ore gonian lines to the Oregon & Cali fornia Company are now about completed. The next thing to be expected ia a lease from the Ore-, goo & California to the operating company, the Southern facinc The present lease of tbe Oregon & California's liues was for forty years, and took effect about three years ago. It develops that the original proposition for the pur cbasa of the Oregon ian lines was entertained by Oregon dt Cali fornia stock-holders. Differences of opinion grew up, and while tbe stockholders were divided as to the advantages os tbe purchase, time was passing by, and Hunting ton thought best to take hold of them himself and forestall anv other hi tending purchasers. Thav in Too Oftaa Menmmma nff kaokism" Wlthoit Keasoa- The Corvallis Gazette publishes some wnoiesoine truths in com paring the progress of the states of tne racinc slope, out in doing so drops into the frequent error of confounding the careful, conserva trve, prudence of the old Oregon- ians with "mossbackiein." The truth is the old-time citizens of Oregon are criticized and rouudly abaaed without r aeon by too man v of the newspapers of the state These same sturdy pioneers who carved out and budded for themselves and others homes in the early settlement of Oregon are often the men who come forward with money and means to promote the public improvements and progres sive enterprises of to-day at least this is true in Albany and other growing cities of Oregon. While they have no love for the "booms" and wild-cat methods employed in eoineof the towns of California and Washington, they are bv no means asleep, nor are they "rmss backs." Tliere are sluggards among any people, but the majority of the pioneers of Oregon, while they are careful and conservative iu business methods, are more to be relied upon than many of the would-be "hustlers" who damn them, and they have not yet seen the spectacle of a financial, real estate, or business collapse in this state, as have some of our neigh- bora; on the contrary the country and the cities of the state notably Portland, Salem, Albany ami Eugene are experien unit as steady and substantial a growth as that enjoyed by the states north or south of us, not as rapid per haps, but more permanent. The Gazette says : "It is not a pleasant duty to speak frequently of the plodding methods of so large a DroDortioii of Oregon's population, but it re i . . - - quires awakening. We are too conservative too much like the man who does not advertise doing business alongside the man who does. We say, in effect, to the outside world, 'If you wish to buy some goods drop into our store and we will look about and Bee if we have anything you want." But the customer does not come to us when he knows what he wants is in the adjoining store. This 'moss' we carry about is to our state as the cobwebs are to the store which is to conservative to make a show of what it has in stock. "The truth is we need stirring up. The conditions now are dif ferent than when 'our stock and grain were growing while we tlept." While we now sleep our neighbors are enjoying tne morn ing sun of prosperity and advance ment at our expense. . While we felumber our neighbors o i the Bonth are garnering our wheat aud shipping it as California wheat ; taking the products of our grist mills and branding it ub 'California Hour;' plucking our prunes and labeling them 'Cali fornia Fruit,' gathering our apples and naming them 'California Mountain Apples.' Upon the cars in this state our apple, peats and peaches are frequently sold by the train boye as California fruit. Oregon potatoes go eaet as a Cali fornia product, etc. Not satisfied with appropriating inn products, California robs na of the good name of those things for which we have established a high reputa tion. California dog salmon are canned and libeled "Columbia River Salmon" all while we slumber. Our latest production, cascara segrada, or chitiem -bare, ia known in the market aa so'ely a Calfornia product. Upwards o twenty tons of this article of com. merce has been shipped this sea son from Benton county alone "Now that the cascara segradu has become of more exalted value." says the Florence Webt, "a wel known druggist of Eugene wrote to firms in New York as to the pi ice they would pay for the hark shipped direct from that town, and was not a little astonished when the reply came back that the Ore gon cnuieui oarx was worthless. and that they only purchased that sent from ami raised in California Such a leaf from a true historic page of events in one article raised in this state for which another gains the credit." "1 he fact about chiltem is that Western Oregon produces almost nil the bark of this kiud that is gathered on this coast. "Our neighbors on the north are not less active, but more scrupu lous than oar California friends. By their system of financial legis lation Oregon is beintt drained of its available capital by Washing ton, which also attracts the large amount of eastern capital now seeking investment in tbe north west, Again, Washington is an energetic advertising competitor. It does not believe that the money invested in a large sign is so mucb capital wasted. The Washington merchant is wide awake while t x many of our Oregon business men are taking a conservative nap upon the counter, "allowing the business to run itself." "Nature has done- iit part by Oregon and it now rests with the people whether t be the grand est state in the Union or become distanced in tbe race of commer cial supremacy."
