Thb discussion of questions that are now brought before the people under the head of the various isms political ana social ttiat are finding advocates, is a matter o1 importance and praiseworthy' A full consideration of theui be given before they are esKused. Indeed no espousal should be given until practical results have beeu shown. The Louisville Courier-Journal, in taking up this subject says; "When the government controls tLe labor market, when it see ksu do what wen are tryinir to do for themtelvea, when it subs titutes forte for free will, when it deter mines bow long and for what wages a man may work, who shall and ball not work, where a man shall trade, what be must do with bis earnings or his profits after he has gained them, when the govern ment enters the family and decides what the children may be taught, and how all may live, it makes little difference whether that gov ernment is a government selected ly a vote of the people or a gov ernment 'established by force of arms. Always, and inevitably, governments soendowed become oppressive, and the oppression m. . i a . isiis neavieai upon the masses Every one admits that labor does nut get its full share of ita product, but it gets a larger share to-day than it ever did, and a man to-day is worth moie, and more capital less, than it has ever been in the history of the race, as the rate of interest shows. But we are still suffering from ages of oppresion, from warped views of Hie, from im moral practices, ' from faith- in forte and skepticism as t the value of freedom : from the false theories of certain well-educated gentlemen who believe they are ca'led to take the place of provi dence toward the workingclase, that they understand themselves ; from sentimentalism that sees the world through a glaso darkly and refuses to stand face to face with all of ita diffnalties. Poverty is dreadful, but it can only be abol ished "by multiplying the produc tive capacity of man and of machines. Every step in this direction, every multiplication of the good things of life, has miti gated the hard conditions of the laboring classes, and it lias done this in the fare of tiie prophecies to the contrary coming from men w ho were the predecessors of the prevailing school of sentimental iaiu.
