The result of the recent election has not put an end to the presi dential chances of either Wm. McKinley or Thos. B. Reed, but it has probably postponed their dat s. Blaine or Alger would be winners at the head of the ticket in '92. SIX MEN DROWNED. Small Boat Wrecked by Whale and the Occupants Killed. San Francisco, Nov. 10. The loss nf i x men from the whaler, Charles W. Morgan, which ar rived Saturday from Okhotsk sea, hat just been made public. The men leit the vessel in a small boat September 1st in pursuit of a wh ile. The whale was success fully harpooned and started off at a rapid rate towing after him the boat, which contained scond mate, II. A. Martin and five sea men. Another boat was launched, but tlie party, failed to catch op with the first one, and fo setting m I hey returned to the vessel Nothing-was ever found of the boat containing second mat and five men, and it is believed the whale maehed the beat, killing the oc cupant. Nov. 10.- A hi wreck of log cars occurred at 3 o'clock this afternoon near Oilman on the eastern branch of the Seattle, Lake Shore & Eastern. Coming over a eteep grade with eight trucks piled hiuh with logs the en gineer lost control of the engine. The whole train sped o" a ram page down the grade. Engineer Sargnnt and the fireman, with Conductor Sliver, jumped off end were hurled to the ground with great force, but escaped serious injury. The cars all jumped the track and the logs were piled in a contused neap. The engine stayed on tne raits, ami alter running a short distance stopped of itself. A hor rible murder was committed last nignt near Merced Falls, a email village on Merced river, about twenty niib8 from this city. John L. Ivett, seventy years of age, and worth half a million dollars and without an enemy, was the victim. ' "Ivett 'live' at his ranch near Mwd Falls with his wife, a vonnif girl of twenty, to whom he had been married about two years, lie had to houses, one occupied by his ranchmen and the other in which be lived himstlf. The lat ter bouse was about 200 yards from the other. He was not seen again until this morning, wl.en the ranchmen found his body at the Dead of the stairs leading to the wine cellar. It is conjectured that after goinz home he lit a lamp and coimnenc.-d to write a letter to his wife, as an unfinished page was found on his desk. It is supposed that the mutderer rode up to the bouse at this time, tied his hortc outside, and entering the room where Ivett was, and engaged in conversation with him. Ivett, who was a very hospitable o'd man, doubtless invited the man to go the wine cellar with him. It is supposed that as they came up from the wine cellar together, Ivett stooped to close the cellar door when the other man ttruck him two mur derous blows with a hatchet. It is thought robbery could not have been the motive for the crime, as no valuables in the house or on the body were disturbed. IS HE 8HAMMINOT A Pennsylvania Minister Who Preaches While Asleep. H I'NTINGTOX. Ta.. Nov. 10. The Bev. John Kaughman, "The Sleeping Preacher," ol Elkhart Ind , preached to a congregation at Allensville. this county, Friday night. On going into the church, he removed his shoes and coat, and later on relieved himself o his vest. Before beginning he 1 y down on a rough lencn ou the platform, during which he seemed lo be in a couiato state, he rose to his feet and bean a discourse which lasted for four hours. Ai the end of the tint hour he called for water, which h drank bur ied ly, using bis sieve' for a hancker- chief. At the end of four hours and ten minutes, he fell down ex hausted, although apparently not iiaving finished his sermon, and lay unconscious for three-quarters of an hour. The Metropolitan opra house was packed to-night, it being ihe occa sion of a reception given the Irixh delegates O'Connor, O'Brien, Dillon, Sullivan, Harrington an j Hilly by the Irish societies of New York. The opera bonw was dec orated simply with Irish and American flaga. Many prominent gentlemen were present. The audience was intensely enthusi astic, cheering alternately tor the lelegatcf and Parnell and hissing for Balfour. Among the list of vice-presiuei ts were these names : U rover Cleveland, Levi P. Morton, ('has. A. Dana, W. M. Kvarte, Qi n. Sherman, C. M. Depew, Gov. Abbott, of New Jersey, Gov. Hill, of New York, Carl Schun, Joseph J. O'Donohue," Eogene 'Kelly and Richard O. Gorman. Gov. Hill introduced the delegates tc the audience in a speech, saving they represented a cause hich calls for the svmpathy of the American people. It lias been, said, he added, that the public in fluence of this country ougnt not to be expended with such active interest in Irish affairs. He was sure this was but the sentiment of a few. The total subscriptions amounted to $37,000. ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT. Dempsey and Fltseimmlas Will Fic;h t in New Orleans Portland, Nov. 10. Articles of agreement for a fight between Jack Dempsev and Bob Fitz- simmins, Ihe Australian, before the New Orleans athletic club for a purse of $12,0X0 dollars were received here to day and were signed by Dempsey. The men are to weign rot to exceed io4 pounds. It will take place January 14th. Dempsey will leave lor the sound to morrow and on the 24th of this month will start for New Orleans. Stabbed With Scissors. Seattle, Nov 10. This morn ing a young German laborer named Juliu" Stroscaen was stab bed in the left side with a pair of scissors in the hands of a 16-year-old boy named Joseph Simpson. The boy claimed that the German had stolen five cents from him. and the German struck him, and that he then stabbed him in self defense. Stroscaen is in a pre carious condition. Two Train Bobberies. AnorsTA, Ga.,- Nov. 10 Two niuht trains on the Geon-ia rail way, one leaving Atlanta for Augusta at 11:30 r. and the other leaving Augusta for Atlanta about the same time were robbed last night near the same point. President Adams, of the Union Pacific, says: There is no foundation for the re port that the Union Pacific North western Alliance will be broken at least not while 1 am president." The Union Pacific, he says, has no floating debt t cause t any trouble. The construction of the Portland nd Pnget Sound rail roads has been provided for inde pendently of the Union Pacific, and an announcement concerning this will be made soon. The I'n ion Pacific and the Denver A Gulf has no floating debt, except a minor matter of tome old coupons for which its bonds will issue to the Union Pacific. NEWS FROM MEXICO. Trouble Between an American and n Police Officer. City op Mexico, Nov. 10. A polii-eman attempted to take Ed- ' ward Bouligny, of New Orleans, to police headquarters last n;ght, but the latter refused, aud the police man cpened fire on him in iiouligny's office. which is a branch of Bouligny & Co.,of Philadelphia. Bouligny returned the fire, and hia book-kceier, who stood be tween him and the pvliceman, was fatally shot in the stomach. It is the general opinion here that Bouligny was in the right, but be was neveitheless arrested. The trouble grew out of the pay er ent of wages in Kouligny'a print ing office. The affair has caused a great sensation, va Bouligny is trie largest printer here. His partner in Philadelphia has been advised by wire, and will come here to take chaige of tlie bui-iness.
