A well know n republican leader.connected with tho congressional campaign cot n.tttee, has received from Civil (ei n e Uomtmssioner Koosevelt a contribution of 50, to be used for legitimate campaien expenses in any congressional district where needed. Commissioner Thompson also sent a contribution in aid of the democratic cause. In a con versation to-day, Rootevelt says : The cleiks are as much at liberty to contribute to one party as to another, and they are perfectly safe and free to make no contribu tion if they so prefer. Witbiu the classified service the employes are under no obligations to any party. Governor Thompson is a democrat, serving under this ad mini tration, and lie makes a con tribution to his party. I am a re publican ; l aid mine. It we did not waut to contribute we would not. In regard to the political clubs, of- which'. the- icovernment employes are members, there is no reason why they snonld not be democratic as well as republican, But any of them sill be prose cuted if we have evidence of their trying to force contributions by intimidation. SEVKRK ON Fa KM KK8, Tho Hessian Fly Takea Their Wheat. Kansas Citv, Mo., Oct. 30. An evening paper says : Farmers and grain growers of Missouri and Kansas report the Hessian fiy has made an attack upon early sown winter wheat, and that wheat sown during September is ruined. Reports of severe damage come from Ottawa, Kansas, Lafayette, Cass and Jackson counties, Mis souri. It is believed tftat the damage is general and all fields sown in September will have to be plowed up and the grain put in again. A FKKIOIIT TRAIN. Kac. Off the Track Hotel. and Into at IIintixgton, Pa., Oct. 30. A loaded coal train of thirty-six cars went through a misplaced switch, and was thrown through the hotel Brunswick, and landed in the yard of the Guard house and Jackson house, two hundred feet east-ward. The guests in the hotels were seized with frenzy of excitement and rushed pell-mell into the streets in their night clothes. The loss to the railroad company is $25,000. No estimate can be secured of the property loss. Heavy Failures. New York, Oct. 3D. Springer & Co.. wholesale dea'ers in silk and worsted yarn, hate failed. Bruce P.. Lie, a large fruit grower, died this moming of disease of the heart. lie was one of the most highly respected citizens of California. Thomas Ycung (colored) and Miss Liziie JNoignt (white) presented themselves before Magistrate Urner to day and tequested that he .make them man and wife. They had the necessary marriage license, and the girl's father ac companied the couple and urged the magistrate to perfsrni the cer emony. The magistrate asked the father: "Do you consent to your daughter's marriage with a colo ed man?" Voightsaidhe was per fectly willing. He was then asked if there was any negro blood in his veins or the veins of any mem -ber of his family or family an ceetors. "Not that I know of," said Voight. "Then 1 refuse to perform this ceremony," said Magistrate Urner. "I have too mucli respect for my lace and for i he colored race to join two mem bers of each race in matrimony." The ratty then started to hunt up a clergyman to perfoim the cere mony. All on whom they called refused, and at last i.tvounts the knot had not been tied. 'Un couple live near here, where the color line is evidently not very closely drawn. A POLITICAL mi EST. I One Who Is Threatened With the Same Fate as Dr. McGlynn. New York, Oct. 30. Notes have been lent out that the People's Muoiftipal League would hlri a meeting, at - the Cooper Union Thursday night, and among Mie tpeskers would-Rv; athcr Thomas J. Ducey, pastor of St Leo's church, whose text will be : "Citwens, what are you going to I do about it?" it is advertised at tne league headquarters that Father Ducey's "What are you going to do about it?" will be a most severe and bitter arraignment of Tammanv hall. Father Ducey always has been regarded as entertaining views similar to those of Dr. Mc Glynn and rumor has it that Archbishop Corrigan objects to Father Ducey's appearing at the Cooper Union. The question now agitating the league and Turn many is whether Ducey will speak and possibly meet with the same fate as McGlynn. Cowhlded Her Rival. Baltimore, Md., Oct. 30. Mrs. Sophie Richter, a comely South Baltimore dame, recently discov ered that her husband was devot ing too much oS his time to Miss Mary E. Mooney, one of the belleo in that section. Miss Mooney and Richter were enjoying themselves at a ball last night when Mrs. Richter appeared and without warning drew a whip from the folds ol her dress and cow hided her rival. At the hearing she acknowledged the assault and says Miss Mooney has alienated her husbands affec tions. She waived examination. Hotel Burned. Sisson. Cal., Oct. 30. The hotel Bailey, a prominent tourist reort was burned this morning. The flames - communicated trom a smoke house a short distance from the hotel. Owing to a scarcity of water the building is a total losf . But little furniture or effects were saved. It was own by Washing ton Bailey. Loss $18 000. Insur ance about half. Telegraphera to Strike.. Cihcaoo, Oct. 30. Telegiaphi-rs are said to be formulating a walk out on election day; and a gigantic strike in 1892. A Western opera tor, however, says that there is no truth in the rumor and that it was ' started by railroad men. Colllalea of Trains. San Antonio. Tex.. Oct. 30. At Painted Cave, on the Southern ,,acific railroad, two hundred miles west, a freight train last night c 1- lided with a construction train. Both t-alns were badly wrecked aud two people are reported killed. - Monument Unveiled. Annapolis, Md., Oct. 30. The monument to the members of the Jeanette exploring expedition was unveued uere to-day. Epidemic Potato Fever. Dublin, Oct. 30. An epidemic fever prevails in Killarney. The Ore- trouian will to-morrow say : "It is-denied in many quarters that the Union Pacific intends to build a line down to Gray's bay. on the north side of the Columbia While it' may build there if it chooses, it will deeply offen 1 Ore gon if it neglects the Oregon tide, and, building cn the Washington side, ret builds no line to Astoria, The Union Pacific as Oregon's direct transcontinental road is looked upon by our people as a mad on which they have the tight to place great deiendcnc for the development of the state. Ii should nut a line through to Astoria as quickly as possible, and if it sends a line down on the Washington aide of the Columbia without also bnrlding on the Ore gon side to Astoria, the act and the omission will be dee ly re sented bv the whole people of our Ktate. Oregon is Datura ly friendly to the Union Pacidc and it natur ally thinks the Union Pacific should use its power as far as practicable for the support and de velopment of Oregon. SOLICITING FUNDS For Campaien Purposes contrary to Law. San Francisco, Oct. 30. T. D. McGrath. foreman of the distribu ting room, and John L. Me-res superintendent of the city delivery at the post office, were arrested to-day under an indictment by the United States grand jury. McGra'h's otfi'nse is said to have been com mitted in 1888 prior to the fall elections, and the post office de partment has been investigating the case ever since. J. D. Gibbs, late superintendent of station "A," was also arrested, on the same charge. Murderous Assault. Columbia. S. C, Oct. 30. A special to the Dailv Register from Timmonsville, s.ts: vthile Ed ward Deas, colored, who is run ning on the lepiiDlican ticket for congress, was addressing a crowd of negroes in fhe interest of the Haskell cause, exception was tak en to his remarks bv certain Till- manites, among whom was J. Gully Jackson. The latter cut Deas' face opeu with a knife and would have killed hiin but for a negro named Colmorris, who pressed up to make peace. Jack son turned upon Colmorris and gave hint several painful slashes. Deas will probably die. The Sharon Case Agaln, San Franc sco, Oct. 30.
