Albany, Oct. 10. 1890. The Oregon Exhibit. One of the important questions to be considered !y the next legis lature is that of Feuding an exhi bit from Oregon to the world's fair. When a liberal appropria tion is paked for this purpose it snouid lie given without hesita tion. In point of wealth and natural resources, Oregon stands in the foremost r.mk ot the 1'aeific Coast state.", and her exhibit at the world's fair should lie on a scale broad enough und big enough to let the world know that Oregon is really a great stale and that her people are progressive and enterprising. Yesterday one of the most diffi cult surgical operationB was per formed in tins city witn careiui attention and perfect success. Whv should cases requiring surgi cal operation lie taken away from home w hen all the skill required car. be bad right here, and a great deal mote of personal care and at tention than can be had anywhere away from home. Dr. U. W. Jlaston assisted by Drs. W. II. Davis and J. P. Wal lace performed the operation spoken of, and it consisted in removing an ovarian tumor from the wife of Mr. - L. Ehret. who resides on Lyon street near the Southern Pacific depot. The tumor when removed weighed thirty pounds and was remarkably large. Dr. Ma s ton performed the same kind of an apoation for Mrs Bryan of Scio. in June, that was entir.ly successful, and the only thinn against Mrs. Eh rets recovery is her aire which is 57 years. It is cer tainly a matter of congratulatian that Albany is so well supplied w;th skillful surgeons. The Mystery Deepen. Neither his parents in this city nor the States man could hear a w ord in relat ion to thecase from Chicago yesterday. Chauncy Lockwood received a letter in the morning from Clint's brother, Gay. written on the night of the SJth. It was on the evening of this day that Clint was last seen. The letter received yester day offered no clue, merely stating that Clint was away for the night. To Kill Condemned Horses. The East Oregonian s.iys : Stock Inspector E. Gilliam received an order yt sterday from the secretary of the state to kill two horses be longing to G. S. Fogers of Milton, condemned at $15 each, which are aillictcd with nasal gleet. It is learned from Mr. Gilliam that prompt measures have nearly re sulted in the suppression of gleet in the Milton neighborhood. Mr. Rogers' horses being among the isolated cases yet remaining. The lumbering business on tho North Santiam river along the line of the Oregon Pacific railroad ha- already assumed important propor tions, and promises next year to he materially increased. " Several new saw mills have been built in that region this summer and others are in course of construction, as also a number of lumber chutes and log ways. The timber along the North Santiam is pot surpaa ed by any on the coast. It consists princi pally of yellow fir with some white pine, hemlock, oak and maple. Long train b ods of lumber are daily shipped from tue various saw mills along the rood to this city, here to tie distrubted to Salem and various other points in the Willamette Valley, a large amount also being consumed ' in building here. This is fait becoming an imporlant industry in the region named, and is destined to become even greater ai the supply of tim ber is almost inexhaustible. Shall Oregon Be There? Shall Oregon throw eff its mossy cloak, aroiK-e from its lethargy, come proudly forward, iclaiin and till a prominent department in the great international . exhibition of the world's progress, or will she sit supinely indifferent in her im becility, and listen to the triumph ill march of surrounding states rolling vast trains across tlie conti nent, carrying their resources and p: o J uciioiis to Chicago! In 1892, w ben the rebounding roar of the vast machinery of the. Columbian exposition is echoing and re echo ing all over the civilized land un til iti stupendous melody is heard on the most distant isles of theses, .'tuned to m the wilds of. Africa asi i the lungiea ol India: when the representative million's of earth's broad domains are gazing in wonder at the gorgeous specta cle presented in the city on the iv-at lake, shall Oregon be there in place, or will we dishonor our American manhood, ignore the grand opportunity and be rele gated to the obscurity synonymous with alio ignorance and barbarit of th edark ages. Astorn. y A Worthy Iustltutien. Work on the hospital and or phans homo building is being prosecuted with vigor. It will be enclosed by January 1st. .The leg islature will in all probability be asked for an appropriation for this institution, and a more worthy one could not be found. A public hospital is a public need, and as the state gives support to public institutions in most every impor tant city within her boideis except Albany, it would be difficult to conceive bow a petition for aid for this institution ould consistently be refused by the legislature.
