At prestnt there ie, perhaps no other avocation that attracts bo ranch attention, and creates so ranch general interest as does the arching for the precious metal?. Of coarse the principal interest resta with gold, and any direct and positive knowledge that helps in the finding of that metal is of great benefit and eagerly sought after. Moat of the fundamental attribute" of this sought after metal are veil understood, but a constant recurrence to those tests will often tare disappointment to prospectors. Science News gives the well known tests with other information. It say that many cheap alloys of base metals can In made which ery strongly resemble gold ia color and lueter; but, i;i the absence of a complete chemical test, the high specific gravity of gold (19.3) ia the best test of im purity, though this has been in geniously imitated by coyerini; the heavy but cheapermetil,pla::num with a layer of gold. Iron pyrites an 1 other vcllowiah minerals are constantly being mistaken for gold, by inexperienced persons, rich to their disappointment, but a very simple test will show whether doubtful specimen is really the true metal. Cold is very sectile that is, it can be cw amd shaded with a knife, like .a piece of woo-J or horn; while pyrites and other worthless min erals will crumble under the kuife blade like a lump of sugar. If any reader of this article ever finds a yellowish mineral which can be cut without crumbling, it is worth a more thorough test; otherwise he may as well rare himself un necessary trouble and disappoint ment. Very few chemicals have any effort on gold. Selenic acid will dissolv it, but few chemists have ever seen this very rare sub stance. A mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids, aqua regia.will also dissolve it, forming a chloride of gold; and so will solution of cklorine gas Jn water. In both of these liquids a peculiar active ferra of chlorine, known as nascent ehlorine, is present, which prob: Wy unite directly the metal. Gold, like ftll the noble metal, ia unchanged by beating in the air. Ite oxides can be obtained by chemical reactions, bat they are very unstable, and easily reduced back to the metal. The chloride abere referred te is the only salt of any practical importance, and if used te produce Purple of Cassins a compound of tin and gold of un certain composition, but yielding imQtnilce.it ruby color when melted intf; glas. A hundredth of a grain of gold will deeply color cnbic inch of glass. The raon eaetrneive use of the chloride if, however, in eht-iograpby, where it ie need to "tens" or color prints on silvered paper. Thia darkening e the print ia due to the decom position of the salt and depositiou in tke pieturs of finely divided metallic gold, which not only giws . it the desired color but renders the image very permanent. By beating cut between pkcc3 of membrane, gold may bo formed . into leaves of such thinners that 22,0CO of them will only mtike a pile on inch in height. A tingle ounce of gold may thuj he spread over one hundred s luare feet. In the manufacture of gold thread fvr embroidery, a cylinder of silver i covered with geld Mid aiterwrd drawn out into wire. In this way six ounces of gold have been made to yield over two Lundrcd mil-s of gilt wire. Even ct thid extreme tenuity thecoftticg is per.'ect, and doe not rust or tarnish. The most remarkable short line of railway in the world is probably the tubmeiged railway at Onion, jiaur JUilboa. It runs down an evenly sloping shore in double line to a distance of 630 feet and has been constructed by a Spanish engineer for the sole purpose of facilitating the- shipment of iron ores. The only car is a massive iron tower on wheels, in the shape of a pyramid, rising seventy feet from the track. Upon the plat form of thw-tower the -ores - are placed, and thus they are con veyed to the vessel. The pyramidal car, whose wheels are always under water, returning automati cally as soon as iis cargo has been mechanically Bhot into the ship's j hold. The matter of opening the Columbian World's Fair at Chi cago upon Sunday, has already become a subject of discussion, vaiious societies all over the country having commenced send ing in petitions upon the subject, asking that the fair be closed up on Sunday. Their zeal will proba bly only briuz them into disrepute as that part of the question will not come up for consideration for two years yet, and when it does vox populi will rule the" decision and not ihe pile of petitions thr.t have accumulated. The Oregon State Horticultural society gats on record as being in favor of the state legislature ap propriating $230,000, fcr the pur pose of mskiiig a full display of the products of the state, at the Columbian World's Fair in Chi cago in "J3. That action will go far towards fixing upon that aiuouct for the .appropriation. Some sum will have to be voted' and it is best to have it ample for all purposes.
