TMe Ucts Gf the following in , u t the firm well know in There is one less railroad con tractor in Portland than there was. The firm of Antonelle & Doe have been in existence only about to years. Long prior to that Mr. Antonelle had been .doing a con tracting business, lie became acquainted, however, with Mr. Doe, and as Doe's father-in-law, Mr. J. D. Kennedy, of San Fran cisco, was a man with no end of money, being president of a large lumber company, Mr. Antorelle took advantage of Mr. Kennedy's proposition to go upon his (An tonelle') bond for qui.e a large sum. Then Kennedy sugetted that Doe be taken in as a partner. So the firm of Antonelle & Doe came into existence, but it is now threatened with dissolution. The affairs of the firm are not in vt-rv eood shape, as Antonelle has lieen sick', and has trusted to Doe the management of the ac counts. Antonelle & Doe con tracted for the La Grande exten sion of the Union Pacific to Elgin, and Mr. Antonelle thinks a profit on the deal should easily enough have been declared of $25,000. The contract price was $S2,0y0, and Doe a books show ana expen diture of only $28,000. Then there is the San Francisco sea-wall con tract, the exact amount of which is not known. The authorities have, however, held back $30,000 on it as a small portion to insure certain corrections. Then there is $39,000 due on the City Hall contract. More than this, Mr. Doe has sold a contractor's plant which Mr. Antonelle bought Lr $12,000, for $2000. There has also been considerable extra work done on the La Grande-Elgin line, not originally contracted (or, but amounting to $15,000. So that, tanc it altogetU r, Mr. Antonelle is anxious to meet his partner and force a settlement from him. Doe has a family in San Francisco, where he is well dnown. The above statements in the case are substantially those made by Antonelle to his attorneys yes terday. Antonelle could not lie seen by a reporter. Heleflonthe six o'clock train last evening for San Francisco. Antonelle claims that D. has drawn a large sum of money due the firm from the rail road ottice, ana lias gone away. Doe, bethinks, lelt Portland for San Fraucisco last Saturday. A WONDERFUL ARRAY. Hew Qxdi In Quantities To 8ait Most Fastidajns. tie In the matters of extent and quantity, Mr. V. R. The murderers of the Fredrick sons in Pacific county Washington, last year, who are now under sen tence of doitl. at OyeUervillc, are said to be quite cheerful. Rose and Gibbons seem to be quite cheerful and do not appear at all cast down with there im pending fate. llulld Cottage-. Hundreds of desirable dwelling houses could probably be rented, without trouble, in this city, if they were in existence. And what bet ter investment could be made than to erect cottages and rent them to those who are Reeking homes here. Thev could not fail to meet with a livefy demand at highly remuner ative" figures. Barren Areis to EasWn Oregon Oonld Be u.j- ir o J .r Ja.uo i 9Tj x. ruuuutivo William Ham. Hall, ex-stafe engineer of California and fate supervising engineer of the United States irrigation survey, was in Portland Monday. In regard to irrigation schemes in Eastern Oregon, Mr. Hall expressed him self very plainly, and as he is the best authority on irrigation on this coast, his opinions are worth consideration : "There are," Mr. Hall Baid. "six good irrigation enterprises in East era uregon ana possibly ten or twelve which are entirely feasible, and with the -co-operation and sympathy of the people, they could be carried out, rendering fertile from 50,000 to 100,000 acres of land each, which is now non producing or yielding only a fifth of the crop that could be obtained with water. "A curious state of affairs, how ever, exists. It requires both or ganized enterprise and a basis of credit to construct any of these systems of irrigation, and a direct outlay of from $500,000, to $1,003 000 in each case. This amount of outside capital invested in a dis trict should of itself be a great consideration. Then the land, which at present is worth $1 25 per acre, would bo worth $50. Linds which are barren :i v, with plenty of water would produce -1:1 i.r 5') bushels of wheat jit acre. 'Ir wo'.i'd natur.iliy be snppof-d th n the people of Eastern Oregon would Im: anxious 1 1 enc-jur.:e and co.opuate w it'u irrigation compjn ies. In Calii'ornia initiation !ii tiicts. landowner are willing to pay from $" to $15 per acre as a bonu?, and a vearly rental of from $2J0 loflM. 'Th.-y have learned tilt? value of liter and freely pay the rates. But the people 6: this tt.ite Sixuu to think they an enpr all the privilege of ini.a tiou without tha-.ing any oi the costs. "The Baker valley irrigation eclieme is to irrigate 90,000 acres of land from a ditch to be supplied by the Powder river. Adam 137 feet hih will bo built across the river damminz up the wa'ers over an area of 1(500 acres. There w ill be betw een 50,000 and 00,000 acres of otherwise poor laud thus irrri gated and rendered capable of pro ducing prolific c rop3. The scheme is in the hands of responsible parties and is entirely feasible. The company has as yet asked for no bonus, but a contract of $2 per acre water rate per year for the land thus benefitted. Although the requirements are bo reasonable the people show great unwilling ness to co-operate, and if this pol icy on the part of the farmers is continued the scheme is likely to fall through. The leading papers of this state can best benefit the people, particularly of the eastern portion of the state, by educating them on the benefits accruing from irrigation. "In Washington the Northern Pacific railway company is taking steps to irrigate the North Yakima valley, a district known as Sunny side, and comprising 100,000 acres on the Lower Yakima. The waters of four lakes, with a- drain age area of 18 square miles, w ill be stored, and distributed by canal 130 miles in length, Inch are now being located. The water will cover the area to be irrigated to a depth of four fed. Half o( this land belongs to the Northern Pacific Railway Company." Jlrl Chosen fur a Leader. During the revolution in Buenos Ayres a young girl named Eufrasia Catral played an important part. She showed an immense amount courage, and was chosen by an operative societv as their leader during the demonstrations of joy at the fall of Celman. The girl, who has a slender yet powerful figure, beautiful face, and dark curling hair, was dressed in white, with a red scarf, and rode in a triumphal car decorated with Hags and flowers, and answered the ap plause of the crowd by gently waving a branch of palm. When the prcctssion reached the princi pal square the car stoppe d, and the youthful patriot made a speech, pointing out the importance of the demonstration, and crying, "Long live the Republic:" The enthu siastic crowd took the horses out of the car, and it was dragged by a number of young men to the meeting house of tne union, w here the girl was forced to speak once more. She is now considered the "first citizeness" of Buenos Ayres. A Matter of Inteiest. The proceedings of all county commissioners' courts, and other county financial business should be thoroughly known by the jkio pie, so that all f hall be properly posted in regard to thrni, and pre pared to act at the proper time when necessary. The only way to effect this object is to have the pioceeding9 of the commissioners meeting published in full in the newspapers. To do this an ad of the legislature should empower me counties to aaveruse m the pa pers, and the proceedings should be published in full. Tho co?t would be trilling and the advan tages would be many, ft - a mat ter that the incoming legislators shou!d look up and be repar.:d , before hand, to start the ball a I rolling in a shape to make the law sure of a iasage. An Intllcntlun. One of the pointers as to the businbss growth and prospeiity, is the fact that there is not a vacant house in the city, and every avail able room, for family Use, is en gaged. People are constantly peeking dwelling houses, and many more would move here if tiipv could precure places to live in. It is n well known fact, of coiirHo, that no water, in its nat ural state, can be absolutely pure, but in cities it is impossib'e to get the natural water that is even relatively pure. Theonly recourse then is to use artificial means to purify the water. A filter is the bett and only economical means of accomplishing this end. There is no question upon this point whatever, and our enterprising merchants, Messrs. Smith & Sen ders, deserve great credit for taking up the famous Pasteur filter, which is acknowledged to be the best in the world. Its use give- absolute purity of water. Horse Lost.
