This being childrens day at the fair and a very rainy one too, the attendance was large in the after noon. A good downpounng web foot rain seems to ouly turn more people toward the Exposition buildings. The various street car lines now give easy and quick means of get ting to and from there. And when one is within rain and dis comforts are soon forgotten, there being so much brightness inside and so much to attract the sight one must be duLI indeed not to enter somewhat into the general carnival spirit which pre varies. The galleres seoui to be nearly always pretty well tilled when the band is playing, showing that Lioretta still holds his audiences day after d.y. As an .xKsitionof the industry f trade the tair may be considered excellent, but as an Exposition of the industries of Oregon and the northwest. 1 think 1 am justified in ottering a little criticism. First our great lumber industry isrepre senteJ only by a few small pieces of wood which any one could al most carry under his arm, placed their 1 believe by a transportation company. I do not recollect see ing any coal on exhibit at all, and the only stone shown is artificial made from imported cement. Perhaps though the Exposition budding itself shows what our lunilter can do, but ouly one kind of it. Some line furniture and cabinet work shows some more of mi woods, but only to a very lin.ited extent. . rue their is a set Uon of a maple tree w ith bark removed and varnished nicely, steading in an out of the way cor ier, which indicates w lint a stoeof beauty their is in the wood awaiting the citizen, and sho-wimr of our splendid native woods and manufactures therein is sadly lack ing to a loyal Oregonian showing mat iraue leaas ueciaeaiy and not manufactures, of course this would pei haps be as it should were tb,ia a TOE MOT?7nyG ' Portland inatitntmn -or' . . . Salem Statesman, Oswald, the m ;n from Freeport. 111., and father of the two girls who were living alone in a house here with Stonenian, baa once more distinguished himself. It will be remembered that Stoneman is awaiting the action of the grand jury, accused of having committed rape upon the older Oswald girl, and that her father made an at temptseemingly in the interest of Oswald to take her out of the country. But in this attempt the law frustrated him and the girl is now here waiting to give her testi mony next week against Stoneman before the grand jury. Being de feated in getting her away Oswald slipped up to Eugene, where the younger girl was m iking her home and took her. He started East with her day before yesterday. At the regular monthly meeting of the Salem building and Loan association last night fUiHi was loaned. It went in two purses of ilOt'O each, and for each interesr was paid in advance for periods of seventy-five months. This shows in what a prosperous condition the association really is. When the directors met yesterday evening they had on hand subject to loan 1051.25, and when they adjourned i hey had loaned $20: 10. This shows clearly where tne profits are and why stock in il is so desirable The borrowers of the $2000 having paid in their seventy-hve months interest permitted the loan to be so large. Sheriff Schmidt, of Clatsop county, with a deputy, arrived in Salemyesterday with two inmates for the penitentiary.
