Sons of the most interesting and instructive objects in existence, retbi ancient buildings that have been the leault of the skilled labor of tbe baman family. They have stood as marks VP the historic tl epochs', and have been objects of care and, even veneration. One of the ..most interesting of these was the remains of the almost extinct race of the Moors in Spain. A recent writer truth fully says that all students of his tory and admirers , of ancient splendor will hear with keen regret of the. casualty which has hap pened to the Alhambra, that mag nificent monumt-nt to a fallen race, which an illustrious American writer brought to the renews . at tention of civilization. A year ag. m hurrv-ane blew down some ol the marble columns, and on Tues day a great fire, supposed to be the work of an incendiary, destroyed several of the finest rooms and halls of the palace. In all the, strange and incomprehen sible history! of .Spain there is nothing that engages curiosity more tuao the share of the Moor. A renowned Scotch historian has given luminous prose a living picture of Charles V. ; a brilliant American has lingered over the deeds of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic ; the saute hand lias -vividly portrayed the gloomy piety and religious bigotry of Phillip II. : these have many fascinations for all who wish to know the part, but they yield in interest to the half hidden history of the Moors, who for seven hundred years held the finest parts of Spain, and es tablished there the highest civili sation of the East. The Alhambra is the moat imposing relic of their architectual taste and skill, and.it la the greatest attraction in Spain lor the curious and the scholarly. Not much ia left in Spain to prove her former grandeur. Theinquisi tire may visit the monastery at Yuste, where the great Cbarlet retired to live the life of a monk ; The Vscurial yet stands a monu ment to his fanatical son; the Mosque of Cordova still bewilder with its innumerable columns, and the Alhambra is a familiar name to every school-boy, but the historic treasures of Spanish archi tecture are not numerous. The destruction of the Alhambra, the greatest of them all, would be a loss to the whole civilized world. Thb Railway Age estimates that railroad construction this year will reach S000 or 6500 miles, againrt 3900 miles last year. A recent writer in the nineteenth century in an article on our railways, lias pointed out although our mileage equals that of the. whole of Europe we have only one mile of line to every twenty square miles of terii tory, while Great Britain has one mile for every six miles' area. To provide ourselves as liberally as the British it will be neccesary to ex tend, the system to tome 600,000 aniles. As we have considerably less than 200,000 miles at present, to complete the otupendous system which the writer thinks we shall ultimately possess we will have to build at least 300,000 moro of the road. A tbe rate 6000 miles a year this would take half a century to accomplish, but it is a notice able fact that the average annual construction is increasing with an Accelerated ratio, therefore it in not improbable that before the Mrst ball of the twentieth century has paased we shall be as well gridironed with roads as England. If the business of the roads main tains anything like the present proportion to mileage, when we poseees 500,000 miles of road the annual earnings will probably retch tbe enormous sum of three t four billions. One of the niost virulent fighters against the tariff law has been and ia tbe Chicago Herald, which leaves no chance vacant to talk against it. The gist of a recent article was that because the tariff on some articles had been slightly increased the McKinley bill in creased taxes on imported articles from 47 to 60 tier cent. In making thin assertion the Herald for ets to mention the fact that since the war an immense number of articles have been put on the free list in deed, so man- 'hat our tables of imports show a far greater volume of goods entered free than of duti able goods. The Herald, in dila ting upon the increase of duties on certain lines of good amounting to 13 per cent, entirely overlooks the importantactjthe duty on sugar was reduced nearly one hundred percent. The trouble with the Herald is that it is dissatisfied with our system of reducing taxa tion. It knows that a great re duction has been made, but it is displeased because the cut was not inde on classes of articles which we are capable oi producing in this country. In other words, it isdis satisfied because the foreigner is not permitted to compete on term f equality in the Ameiican market with home producer. The post'jtlice authorities are complaining because much nvttter intended for the State of Washing' 'on goes to Washington, D. C. and vice versa, and because people tddresing,letters to places in the Dakota simply write "Dakota," without pietixing "North" or "south." The complaints illus trate defects in our nomenclature that should h.tve been perceived long ago and remedied. It might easily have been done in the case of the Dakotas and Washington, for instance, if common-sense had been allowed to have a controlling influence. But local feeling and local pride in names long attached were too strong to be overcome, and all the future must pay the penalty in inconvenience, mis takes, delay and awkwardness.
