His omniscient task takes him every where and into every thing, and in the main he makes himaelf extremely useful. The Tribune says: "The re cent transfer of William Tell, his trusty how, hia little son, the apple, the reserve arrow intended fo the heart of the tyrant Gessler in case the other one killed the target-bearer the transfer of these familiar things from Swiss history to cosmopolitan romance hat served to call attention to the fact that the modern reporter is more trustworthy than his brethren of an earlier age. II is is that scientific' spirit which, choosing for its watchword "prove all things," resolutely declines to take foi wanted much beside the state ments of the multiplication table : bis also is the aim to get all tin news, and it is coupled v ith the conviction that unless he gets i; correctly he might better not get it at all. The modern reporter does not devote all his time to re cording whatever is most interest ing in the life which now is. In addition he is constantly challeng ing the wisdom of the fathers his hump of reverence might be better tieveloped so that it ia hardly to much to affirm that the partisans of the notable histrionic personage are wanting in prudence uult.-s they sleep with one eye open, holding themselves in readine-sto repel attacks - if they can in tended to demolish their favorites, or at all events to revise the popu lar estimates concerning them.' Some of the recent press lii patches that have been sent out, perhaps bear an in.piess slightly dissimular to the Tribune's esti mate of the veracity of the reporter but those are merely erratic spasms of individuals, and do not form a standard by which to judge any considerable number of the fraternity. The large majority carry out the Tribune's estimate. Thk passage of the tariff' bill hy congress, will call out much de cusion and comment upon the probable results. One of these results is spoken of by the Chron cal as follows: "The people of California will soon be able to judge from practical results whether reciprocity with the Hawaiian kingdom has been a good tiling for the state. Under the new bounty eys-tern beet sugar factories are stue to be established in this state, which will give em ployment to large numbers of workingmen and provide a ready market for immense quantities of agricultural product which is hard ly known to our farmers at present. The production of one hundred million pounds of beet sugar by- California will be of more value to the state than the commerce ol Hawaii could possibly be n its product of cane sugar were in creased to half a billion pounds annually. The reason for thin is obvious. While we supply the islanders a portion of the goods they consume, we will supply the California producer with all he consumes. Besides the profits of production will remain in this country; under reciprocity they remained abroad." The point taken by every thinking pel son, and ia of especial interest to re gjn as well as California, for it is just as applicable here as it is there. Tuk pinch in the money market now is, first and foremast, due to prices of cereals, 26 per cent higher than last year. Speaking roughly this takes 25 per cent more '"money" and currency to handle the crops. Cotton is a cent Jower , than last year, but 00,000 bales more had been received to .Septem ber 0th, this year than last. Taking added prices on cereals and the increase.
