Either the story is a wicked prevarication or there are several yagrant Indians in that locality that should be made into "good Indians" in the speediest possible manner. As the arts and sciences advance the new and improved methods . and practices come into general . use. We learn to do things better and discard the old methods. It is said that in our mechanical operations the tendency to substi tute metal for wood is growing very rapidly. We all know how largely barbed wire has taken the place of the old-fashioned wooden fence, and we can easily comprehend that the substitution has done much to arrest the destruction of our forests. Now we are informed that some genius has patented a at -el post, made of tubing, to which the barbed wire can l fastened, and which can be pro duced much cheaper than the timber posts now used. Of course this will effect another great sav ing of wood. Metal ties for rail roads arc already growing in favor mad in time will supplant wood en tirely. Bridges which a few years ago were built entirely with timbers are now largely constructed oi iron, and the builders of modern busi L ness structures are rapidly learning to eschew wood and use in its place steel and iron. This tend ency explains the phenomenal in createinthe output of manufac tared iron which daring the past decade has nearly doubled in the yitd Stales and gives evidence of becoming still greattr in the very near future. The riud in which we liv was long ugo char acterized the iron age, but we ven ture to say the most far Keeirii: of those who so denignated it did not begin to compehend to what ex tent this useful metal would he used by the civilized world. The question of sustaining the rule in the house of representatives over which the opponents of Speaker Keed have made so many accusations and are attempting to manufacture political capital, will be heartily approved by the peop'e.
