At 4:25 this morning Orlicer Hyan. of the k1icp force, tliscovered tire issuing from the rear of the Dickson building at the comer of First and E streets. He ran to the nearest box and rang in an alarm, to which the department iminedi a'elv resjionded. Ttie L;ie soon got lieyond con trol owing to the absence of suffi cient water to cope with the situa tion, and in a few minutes the adjoining buildings situated ou First, owne I bv George Woodward and W, K. Smith, were in flames. The fire boys did their best, hut in spite of i heir greatest efforts, the root of the new Clarendon build ing caught fire, and then t;.e ,-ituat on looked serious, for it seemed that the entire block would be swept away, endanger ing considerable surrounding property. The fight lasted nearly in hour, and tlie result was the t .tal loss of the Dickson and Woodward buildings, on which no insurance was held, owing to the extreme high rates charged by the companies. The com mission appointed Au gust U t examine the books of Ex-Slieriff Sloan, of this county, to-day reported to the county clerk of the court their findings in an itemized report. The report shows a balance in favor of the county of $3.701. '.'0. The report is the result of a thorough examination of the Lxoks of the ollice, which were found to have been xxrly kept. While part of the affidavits and important memorandum have been lost, Mr. Si ian wili not hesititte to Settle accounts with the county as returned by the commission. A Pioneer Head.
