They were accompanied by the following members of the Portland Board oi Trade: G. W. Snell, C. I. Idleman, William Fleiduer, S Farrll, Richard Hoyt. Thomas D'D.iy. R. L. Tuft. C. J. Hall, Dr Macrum, M. W. G. Crosby, C. C. Hav and F. I. McKenna. The Board of Trade are entitled to a well deserved compliment for the manner in which they took hold and worked up the interest that led to the hearty co operation of the business men and citizens generally in the ra-.itterof the very pleasant reception given to tne party. Mr. J. H. Townend met the party at Salem and accom panied them here, and lound them t' be a pleasant and social body of gentlemen. The t'ortland deputa iion were somewhat surprised that the Salem. Board of Trade, who had been given due notioe.entirely failed to meet them at the depot there. They one and all expressed themselves much delighted at the cordial and substantial reception given them herel There had been prepared under the auspices of the ) Hoard ol trad ot thiB city two large tables arranged on the depot platform. By t e kindnes- of Mr. J. -A. tiros they were covered with nice, white linen tablecloths. The Oregon Lund Company hid its fine collection of frjits of al kinds in glass jars. The displax f cherries, plums, prunes, straw berries, peaches, curran's, goce- berries, pears, and sampleeof oHts. heat, timothy and green corn in the stock presented an attractive uid beautiful siuht, eminently suggestive of the great future and wondVrful resources of the Wil lamette Valley. ' When the party went to board the train for Corval. is Mr. . W. The Portland deputation were loud in their praise of the treat ment accorded them here, and said that from now on they should as a Chamber of Commerce work for the Willamette Valley and the whole state as well as Portland. Such exhibits and n-ceptions as this one serve to uild up and ad vertise our beautiful city, as these Eastern gentlemen will carry back iv it I them, so they said, pleasant memories and good words for Albany. The hundred or more members of the Oregon Pret-s association, representing nearly every portion of the state, arrived in Oregon's metropolis Thursday and were re ceived in a most hospitable man ner at The Portland, the magnifi cent new hotel, the oe.-t, without exception, on the coast, ami were given the best the house anorueu. At the West Shore omc-, ana at the Marquam Grand theatre, they registered and were lurnished with unique souvenirs in the shape of programmes a passport tor almost everything in the city apparently. President Ueboni, ot the cham ber of commerce, gave a short and pithy welcoming speech, and then 1 he rortiaud gave luncn a la mode. Ihe cable road then w hisked the entire party up one street, down another, hither and thither and straight up the side of a mountain, the same even, rapid rate u bt-hig kept up all the i.nie. A view of the powerful uiacniuery that r. pels the sevi :'l miles of cat- - i v.n the cars as viewed ui.uer the uu- ction of the super intendent of tne works with gie.-i int red. From Fultou pink car ii. !,." were mrni lieu otid the intii. jcri- oi tb" a jocia ion w re taken through that most beauti ful ef all resting places for the dead, Riverside cemetery ; thence through the most beautiful resi dence part of the city and the in tricate winding road to and from the beautiful City park. The evening was spent, first in a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce, at which it was decid ed that the association favored the inauguration of a state board of trade and afterwards at the Mar quam Grand Theatre to witness a must beauti'ul and realistic rendi tion of the "Old Homestead." Yesterday part of the company started on the train for froutdale, but weie stopped short of their destination by running into a freight train ami splitting open the caboose. Luckily, no one was in jured, but the ones who were on the train failed to get back in time ior the boat up ihe river to Multno mah rails, a mot enjoyable trip, on the fa-t steamer Undine. The business session was held on the wav back after taking on the strav- ing ones, who, after the railroud accident, procured the Salem to take them out to meet the Undine At the business meeting officers w ere elected and Astoria was select ed as the next place of meeting. To-day the time was luliy occu Ped vith a ride on the electric ;i.otor line, and a steamboat excur sion to the Oswego iron works and Oregon City. Truly three very- busy days of wonderiul sight-see' ing have been spent in Oregou's nig city, Portland. PKOOUKSalVK PORTLAND. The meeting of the iiencil shov ers of the .-tate at the metropolis of Oregon has bet-n of practical uniitv. it lias accom pushed one desirable result at least, and that is to make the association one of the important fuiure gatherings in the stare. The annual meetings bring the newspaper men together in frater nal greetings, make them ae quainted, create a change of ideas .ii. d, as a natural consequence, lead to a better and more extended journalistic work. They should oe extended and encouraged In the present one the city of Portland exhibited a generosity in entertainment truly munificent the only drawback to it is that in future meetings comparisons will be made to the detriment of such meeting, if held in other places for, of course no other city in the state, can begin to offer the at tractions that Poitland can. Oregon is proud of her inetropo lis, and well she may be, for Port land, with her magnificent and mammoth business houses sec oud to no te on the coast her nu merous systems of street railways. including the electric, which runs the entire length of the city and out to Fulton park, and the cable line to Portland heights, which is the finest equipped line in rolling stock and improved machinery in the known woild, stands as the city of citit s of the Northwet. The growth of Portland has been of thai permanent and solid char acter which indicates that she is as vigorous for the future as she has been in the past, and as last ing as the everlasting hills upon which she is prettify ouil'. A Mlnderer Kebuked. The Oregon City Enterprise well says : "The 'hehalis Nugget casts a tlirtv sling at the Willamette valley, when it says that the hop crop through Western Oregon is almost an entire failure, through the ravages of the hop lice, which seems to get into the entire Wil lamette vallev. He goes on in this strain and says the wheat crop is a f iilure aud that tons ol half grown apples are rotting on the ground. Never was a more flagrant untruth uttered, as the residents of Oregon well know. The wheat crop of Oregon, while the yield is hardly as huge as usual, is well filled and of extraordinary quality. The fruit prospects of the Willamette valley weie never better, ai d the fruit is sound snd healthy, while no one in this country has ever heard of hop lice in this vicinity.
