John Miller, aged 20, a prfesed son of Joaquin Miller, the poet of the Sierras, made his es--a.e !ast night from the peniientia.y, where lie has been confined f"r the ast four months. Miller was a trusty, working at the reform schfol, and taking advantage of the darkness, escaped from tht- house in which he was sleeping. Miller was sen tenced from Portlmid for a two years term for the crime of larceny. In the rridge matter nothing has vet been don. A certain hide dealer that visits Kugene quite fr.-quently failed to work a little game successfully last week. He was shipping a lot of loose hides, and also wanted to ship some enclosed in a sack, but the freight agent would not Din them unless he oened the sack so that he could see what was in it. The hide dealer became enraged and told him that it was none of his business whether the sack con tained deer hides.
