Finlayison died at his home in Philomath, anted 71 years, alter a lingering illness. The de ceased wad a native of Scotland, and came to Oregon in 149. He was one of Albany s pioneers, hav ing resided here until lHtH, when he removed to Foiest Grove, and thence to Philomath. He leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. Judge J. C. Powell, of this city, and hristopher r'inljy.-on, f Colorado. The funeral will take place from the United Presbvtenan church at z o clock to-day, which the friends of the family are in vited to attend. Excursion to Newport. Ample accommodations at the hotels. Death f Mr. Burkhart. Mr. C. G. Burkhart, of this ci'y, received a telegiaui las. evening Irom ins utiner, v. r. ttumuarx, a' Pendleton, announcing th- death of the latter's wife a that place. She bad been in ill health lor several mouths, and had gone with her husband to Eastern Ore- iron in hopes of benefitting her health. The remains will be brought to tuis city for interment. The commission men are very iusy, and one of them said yesterday he wished there were more firms in the busi ness to relieve him of suiue of the work. Last evening alxut t:30 Mr. Frank MuKuigbt was crossing over the ferry into this city, driv ing a team of standard '.'red trot ting niares, ovn"d hy Mcknight hros.. when an accident occurred that resulted in )th iiorxes liemg drowned. The boat had landed on this Hide of the river, and a team that va- ahead him on the boat had driven off. Mr. Mcknight came next, a 'id s artei to drive off. As lie did so the apron of ihe lioa: moved, which frightened one of the horses, and they both ran off of the apron on the upper side. The buggy top was up, and the vehicle followed the horses into t'ie water, which at this point is very deep. Mr. Mcknight sprang out, aod with some difficulty reached the shore He then ran upon the loat and with the ferry man seized the horns' heads, they having been washed down against the ferry-lioat, but the buggy hhd been drawn underneath the boat, and the force of the current drew the horses under also. They came up some ditance below, hut Boon disappeared and were both drowned. They were both fine blooded mares and were valued at f2000. The bugty, to which the horses were still attached, was recovered an hour later. S ich an accident, viewed in the light of the already loud demand for a wagon bridge at this city, shoii d hasten the arrangements for the building of this much needed public improvement. 8TATE - DI5JPATCHE8. Portland, August 13.--This morning Pauline Koldeway, i res dent of Albany, legan divorce proceed nus in the circuit comt of this county, agiinst R bert Kolde way, to whom she was married in Washington city on the 3d of May, 1884. iiiie plaintiff alleges that 20 jears ago her husoanl began drinking to excess, until lour yvars ago when he became an habitual drunkard and incapaci- attl lam Iroui attending to his duties a-i a vetennaiy t-ureon. MANGLED BY A TRAIN. Portland, Asigust 13. At 6:30 this morning Coroner Kiver re ceived a message mat a man had been killed on the Union Pacific track near E. J. Jeffrey's brick yard, in i he rear of Mount Tabor, about six miles from this city. The accident must have occuired last iiiiiht, as the first Union Pa cific train coming this way this morning discovered and picked up the remains. The trainmen Ray that the re mains were scattered on both sides oi the track, and presented a hor rible swjht. A more thoroughly mutilated body remitting (rutu a railroad accident has never lieen brought to this city. One leg was Completely severed from the body and the hands mashed into a pulp. Near the place wheie the lrair inents of the man were uistrinuied were iound the remnants of a whieky bottle and his purse, the latter being saturated with liquor. From this it is surmised that he might possibly have been intoxi cated when death met him on the rail. Later in the day a stranger vis ited the morgue, a king 10 be at lowed to view the remains above referred to. The visitor, who was greatlv affected, identified them us those of his brother, (ieorge Strachan, a paving block cutter, resident at St.. Helens, who leaves a wife and four children. The surveyors are nov within ten miles of Tiltamook. When the line is tinished to that place it will complete the survey from Albany to Astoria, the line between this city and Til amook having alrea ly been surveyed.
