propriation for the Hennepin canal
was defeated.
A motion to reduce tho appro
priation for the Mississippi river
from Cairo down from $2,000,000
to T,0U0 000 was adopted.
Blanchard explained that the
reduction was due to the fact that
congress had made an urgent ap
propriation of $1,000,000 for im
provement of the river on the
understanding that a reduction of
that amount be made in the river
and harbor bill.
The committee rose, and alter
eulogistic addresses in memory ol
the late David Webber, of New
York, the house adjourned.

Albany and Oregon. It was writ
ten by Dr. J. M. Littler, brother
of J. C. Littler dentist of this city :

This city is most favorably located
on the river. It has surrounding

growth, not commensurate with
the growth of the surrounding
country. This city is one of the
oldest in the state and is an old-
tashioned town, much like the
cities of the east a few years aco.
From California to Oregon is in
very many respects a transforma
tion... Whereas, in California.
vegetation bad taken ion somber
appearance indicating that-fuM
maturity had been attained, in
Oregon the vegetation is fresh and
green, indicating the newness of
spring, and life is bounding and
tuil iji every respect.
Now, what are the inducements
this country have to offer? la the
lirst place this is the county seat
of one of the best counties "in the
state ; is located on the Willamette
river, where there is a good lin
of steamboats constantly plying
between here and Portland.
Secondly, the city has ample water
power to run all t lie factories, that
will be required for several years.
The water for the power is brought
in a canal fourteen miles long and
is now running a large woolen
factory; the electric light works;
waterworks; several gristmills;
planing mills; laundry, etc.
There is a Uioni for several differ
ent factories here, including a
paper mill, door and sasli factory,
etc.
Third, the city is inclose prox
imity to the timber. Now within
10 miles of Albany there are line
forests of timber, equal to any in
the country, measuring as much
in smne instances as 100,
Ot'O feet to the acre. The Oregon
I'aeilic K. K. is building a road to
this timber which virtually lave it
at the feet of the people of'Albany.
Again, the railroads that enter
litre are a great thing for this city.
The Oregon Pacific will soon buiid
a trans-continental line across the
t lie Mate anti connect with some
of the eastern trunk lines. This
will undoubtedley lie one if the
best, if not tiie best line of railway
in the state, connecting the city
on the one hand with deep water
at Yaijuina Bay on the Pacific sea
board, and with the ureat East.
In a few months Albany will have
a direct outlet to tbo sea at Astoria,
as the work oi building this -oad
is now progressing tinely, thus

clover-hay and many kinds of
fruits, as: apples, pars, prunes,
cherries, etc., in abundance and
perfection.
The city is niw growing nicely;
probably "l 00 residences going up
now and quite a number of busi
ness blocks are either going up or
under contract. I believe it to be
a good country for investment,
and the eastern man who wants to
come west could probably find
more inducements here than in
many another places having a
greater boom than this one is.
Baronial Ornameat.
The antlers of about 250 elk w ere
shipped from the Columbia river
to England last year. There are
probably a thousand elk killed in
Oregon and Washington every
vear. 1 lie antlers are in demand
in England as ornaments fort lie
old baronial halls, and very hand
some thev look when furnished
with a silver plate inscribed with
the date on which they were
killed by the proud owners. Some
handsome antlers bring a large
price, while others do not bring
enoujjh to pay freight. Astorian.
The ieople of Grav's harbor are
certain of one railroad. The Hunt
railroad is refered to. ami the as
surance of the expectant people
rest upon l lie contract entered
into by G.W. Hunt, the well
known railroad builder, to con
struct and operate a line to the
harbor from"some point on the
Northern Pacific." A bonus, aggre
gating in money and lands to the
enoruius slim of $1 ,200,000 or more,
has been subscribed, anti wid le
assigned to Mr. Hunt when the
track is laid. Tbo "point on the
Northern Pacific'' is Centralia,
which donates $100,000 for the
railroad and its junction with the
Northern Pacific. The route lies
practically the entire distance on
the nortli side of the Chehalis
river, and extends through the
townsof Montesano, Aberdeen and
Hoquiam, terminating at Grav's
Harbor eitv.

in war." The Sun is published by
Walter G. Smith, who was men-tion-d
prominently in connection
with an alleged filibustering
scheme to capture Lower California
a few days ago, and who it was
stated was to be governor-general

issued a challenge to-day, in
which he offers to fight Editor
