Yesterday afternoon at J! p. m., at the home of her patents, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Kainwater. .Mrs. Ida B. Reese, wife of II. .1. Reese, passed away. She was a devoted, wife and mother, and leaves a bus-! band and three small children, j Iwjsides a large circle of relatives and friends to inourn her death. The can didates for the various otlices in Linn county, opened the campaign at this place to-day. The meeting convened at the new town ball and was called to order by J. C. Lyons. G. II. I lit i t -luus was elected chairman. lion. Jell'. Meyers, democratic candidate for State Senator, op ened the discussion, making the gist of his argument a rendition of tiis present views upuu the railroad commission, the lvVrlaiid Water Bill, and the Wagon Koad Bills. lion. John Bryant, union party candidate for State Senator, fol lowed, making a brief presentation of the subject, claiming that the old parties had taken ail the thun der out of their platform by adopt ing its principles. Air. Peter Hume, republican candidate for State Senator, fol lowed, defining his osition in a clear manner, showing that he had always been a working man, had put his money into a home enter, prise to give workingnien employ ment, and his interests lay with them entirely ; he stated emphati cally that he was opposed to non taxable bonds. He said that there were many quest ions that are es sential, one being the assessment law, which should be amended, making the election of precinct assessors a part of the law. His allusion to national politics was simplv that in the arrangement of the revenue tariff enual justice should be given to all, but that protection to American industry should be assured. Hon. .1. K. Weatherford, demo cratic candidate for Senator, fol lowed, making a presentation of his candidacy, lie made the lioiid hill one oi the leading points in his discussion, explaining that Governor Peniioyer signed the Italics and Baker City bond bills without giving them a careful ex amination; he sjxike in favor of maintaining the mortgage tax law and amending the assessment law. I lis rendition of the national is sues was included iu an objection to the McKinley t a rill' bill on the grain sack and jute business. Mr. Templeton. republican can didate for representative, followed, making a plain statement that he was a farmer, a taxpayer of Linn county conversant with the wants and needs of the people in the leg islature, and although he was not a public speaker nor a politician, but if elected, would guard the rights and needs of the people oi the country and carry out the wishes of his constituents. Mr. Parker, union parly candi date for representative followed, excusing the absence of lr. Ilen drex. ami reiterating the claim of Mr. Bryant that the union party made tiic platforms of the oilier parties. He promised, if elected, that he would defeat just as many bills Jiefore the legislatuie as it would be possible. Mr. C. J. Shedd, democratic candidate for representative, slat ed that he was afarmci, had never before been a candidate. He fav ored legislation for all and was against class legislation and op M)sed non-taxable bonds. Mr. R. A. Michenor, republican candidate for school superinten dent, was presented and gave a good presentation of educational affairs, and made an excellent im pression. Mr. Russell, democratic candi date for superintendent, followed, claiming that it was impossible to make a speech upon the subject already handled, but promised to fulfill all that the former had prom ised. Matt Scott, democratic candi date for sheriff, could not Ik- found hen called for, so James A. Pearl the republican nominee for the of fice, was called for. and re sponded with a plain talk. and con eluded with a song that brought immense applause. To-day the canvass will he continued nt Seio. The water came so fast that it drowned five pigs for him before he knew what was the matter, says the Valley record. Hail fell to the depth of six inches, diiing con siderable damage to grain and stripping the fruit trees within a limited area. The deceased bad gone with his familv t California for the benefit of his health, hut was taken with pneumonia soon after arriving. Their infant daughter died, and his health continued to fail, lie then started home. Ho was kindly cared for by relatives and friends, who were with him, but he died at Sacramento, and his remains and the body of the little one were brought home together and in terred in the Masonic cemetery. George S. Royce was liorn in Buritt, .Vinnebago county, Illinois, on Sept. 12, I8i0. His father, w ho served in the war as one of the Illinois Volunteers, died when he was two years o'.d. and bis mother died a year later. He was then taken into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Strauder Froman, with whom he crossed the plains in lst'j. ami with whom he grew to manhood. Arriving in Oregon in October, 1MI4, thev settled in Albanv, where his life was principally spent, lie I was united in mariiage with Missj Nellie O. This money will not be available until August. The jetties have stood the storms and seas remarkable well since opeiat ions ceased. No breaks have tUen place, but it will take a month or more toinake repairs so that work can becarried on in I shape. It it announced that the narrow gau lie roads will be turned over to Mr. C. P. 1 1 nut ingtuti this week, and he w ill then take charge of all the wealth of receipts which will render any other receiver unneces sary, and Mr. '. N. Scott, who has so on;i acted iu that capacity, will wind up the business of his ollice as speedily as may be. This consummation, having some own er in charge of the road who has capital to lix it up ami furnish ami run it in good style, has long been wished by all residents along the line ami the public generally. It may now be confidently expected that the work of renovating and reconstructing will U be-jun all along the lines, and the work of extension at both ends. Sehnol Vl.illei. Superintendent F. B. McFlroy was in the city yesterday. He is arraiiagiiig for the state teachers institute to be held in Salem on June o0. also for the national edu cational association which will convene in St. Paul on July S. It is proposed to establish head quarters for this State at St. Paul.
