ment, and his interests lay with
them entirely ; he stated emphati
cally that he was opposed to non
taxable bonds. He said that there
were many quest ions that are es
sential, one being the assessment
law, which should be amended,
making the election of precinct
assessors a part of the law. His
allusion to national politics was
simplv that in the arrangement of
the revenue tariff enual justice
should be given to all, but that
protection to American industry
should be assured.

The Yatiiiina .lettie.
Reports from Yaitiina stale that
at present no work is being done
by the government on the jetties
ami none can be done until con
gress passes the river ami harbor
bill, in which probably Vaijuina
bay will receive $I2.".0I)I'. This
money will not be available until
August. The jetties have stood
the storms and seas remarkable
well since opeiat ions ceased. No
breaks have tUen place, but it
will take a month or more toinake
repairs so that work can becarried
on in I shape. The tramway
on the south side rt ill have to be
extended up the bay at leas! l."00

The shift ing oi t he sand .u thai
side neces-ilates this additional
work. Improvement.- like this
one on aVs'iuina bay should have
inoiiev enough to carry the work
onto completion. A stoppage of
work flitters away money and
makes the ultimate cost nearly
double w hat it would ! ii carried

principles.
The Narrow Cange Lines.
It it announced that the narrow
gau lie roads will be turned over
to Mr. C. P. 1 1 nut ingtuti this week,
and he w ill then take charge of all
the wealth of receipts which will
render any other receiver unneces
sary, and Mr. '. N. Scott, who
has so on;i acted iu that capacity,
will wind up the business of his
ollice as speedily as may be. This
consummation, having some own
er in charge of the road who has
capital to lix it up ami furnish ami
run it in good style, has long been
wished by all residents along the
line ami the public generally. It
may now be confidently expected
that the work of renovating and
reconstructing will U be-jun all
along the lines, and the work of
extension at both ends.
