TUD WEALTH PRO BLEU. Thequestion of thedisbtribution of wealth among the people is a fertile one for discussion. It is made of great importance by its' being employed i the vehicle of eiinile and metaphor in illustrat ing and elucidating many of the palpable wrongs and evils of the times. That these wrongs and evils, do exist i- apparent to all. and ca.nuot exueeied to be other-I wise while human beings remain just a little lower than the angels. In the discussion of this and kindred questions however there are evidently extreme views taken that are really detrimental, as they create false impression. One of these extreme views is quite often heard in the annunciation that we are lH'coming a nation .t eerfs and that the centralized power of the government has usurped the rights of the people. Such statements, by their ex ageration tend to produce ill fuel ing and result in discontent and a retarding of the righting of exist ing wrongs. The Indianapolis Journal, while it represents, jerhaps, the oji posite extreme of the question, tells eome j.ertineiit facts in its rendi tion of the subject. It says. "vVhoever invented or !ir?t used the phrase about the rich growing r'eher and the por growing poo re; d.'-erves a monument iiom the propiu-ls of evd and the .qostle oi discontent. It is one of tho?e api alliterative phrases that catch tin ear of unthinking people, and make the American people believe they are the worst governed and most oppressed people on the face of the earth. It follows, of course, fiat it is a stock phrase of free trade orators and editors, and oi all the preachers of communism and socialism under whatever form or name. The phrase is a hoary fallacy and a threadbare lie. It never was true as to this country, and was never less true than it is to-day. It is disproved by every every census report, by every savings-bank report, by every compil ation of statistics bearing on the subject, and by the experience of even- community in every state of the Union. Ask any banker whose business it is to know men's fin ancial status, ask any officer of a safe deposit company, any assessor or appraiser of property, any representative of a commercial agency, and it will be found that the wealth of all classce is increas ing in about the eame proportion, w hile the individual representa tives of different conditions arej constantly changing places. Some of the rich are growing richer and some of the poor poorer, but many oi the wealthy men oi to-day are pior to-morrow and the wnsre worker of one generation is the capitalist of the next. ?-Iol of the millionaires oi this generation started with little or nothing, and their sons will probably end the same way, while the struggling poor boy of to-day will then be rjlling in wealth and living i:i luxury. The truth is, this country is by far the most prosperous j,i the world. The American people are accumulating wealth faster than anv other, and while there l are some sharp contrasts in cur 1 social conditions the general j average of wealth and comfort is j rising all the time. If the num.-. ber oi million tired is increasing, the n umoer ot persons worm a hundred thousand dollars, fifty thousand, ten thousand and one th juaund is increasing still faster. ( The aggregate weaitn oi zno country ia increasing at a rapid rata : and its distribution is prob ably as nearly equal and juet asj wiU cvfer trirm r.i r he reached, under anv form of government or Iuwh." I " Il:u- l;lL Juuri'.ai ii coned all probability, a.; t? iv: jnensl increase oi wealth, still the i-ollos-e.sl individual fortunes t hut have been and are hpinj; lmiit up, in a palpable aii'l liinic-ii i.ii -lo draw t;p on the rtsmiiTrs r.f the p 'or.r elates, in !.U'.-':i a glaring luet that no amount of argument or cxplan ation ear. varnish it over nor hide itd iiuicting kno;vled:e from the people. Another faet that llw Journal fails to note i that there i9 a vital truth in the statement that number oi moderately jioor ia rapidly growing out of propor tion with the class of immoderate ly rich. While it g misleading and harmful to constantly reiterate that the poor in this country are constantly growing poorer, it is more harmful to wink at the fact that the rich are growin C'llOr- I mouslv richer, ami th'tt between ! the two extremes there is a mean, j that for the iiitnr, wciif.ro :M1,1 I happiness of both rich and poor, shonid be thoroughlv uudeivtood and acted upon.
