Send tut A Flh I'oln Itv Mail. From The Boston AilmtiKr. I'ostoflice. officials and employes often have queer articles otlered them for transportation through the mail?, which at times places them in an embarrassing position. lTp in New Hampshire there is one of these little otticcs at which let ters may le registered and money orders obtained, but at which the mail car attached to express trains never stops. The mail bag is hung on a crane beside the track, and the mail clerks hook it in as they whirl past on the train at forty miles an hour. The other day a man appeared at the postotlice with a joint tish-polc, making a package 45 inchc" long, which he regiptered and mailed. It w:is available under the regulations, full postage and the registration fee had been paid, but w hat to do with it puzzled the postmaster. It was too long togoin the mail-bag' He could not send it in any other than the mail car. lie explained hid dilemma to the person mailing the pole, but he disclaimed any resonsibility. It was in the custody of the I". f. mail and he had nothing futher to do with it. Visions of a long journey at his own exjense to the nearest (-top-ping place of the mail car, of signalling the train and losing his place for it and of other unpleasant ; thinf; flitted through his brain j Hewassurelv in a fix. He got out of it finally by drivinar some miles to the house where lived a railway mail clerk, and giving the j bundle into his hands, But this j particular postmaster prefers to j have no more such mail matter as this, for the present.
