It is in accordance willi this that we so oiten urge larmers to anenu the horticultural meetings. Every farmer ought !o be a successful fruit grower, to some extent, lie can lind some varieties that he can cultivate with success, if he will try. P.ut it will not ln to shut hi eves and go it blind. Often an on-hard is planted where it never would be planted, if tho work was done intelligently. The land for an o.rhard site ouirlit to be either naturally or artificially drained. The vast majority of people know this. Yet how many orchards are planted on w et lands. Sometimes this is the result of ignorance, but oftener of careless ness. It may be that a farmer has no suitale site for an orchard, or at least not one that is naturally suited. I'nder such circumstances, it is certainly not wise to em bark in fruit -trow ing to any great extent, and in fact, to no extent unless the land ran be prepared for the iuriose. Clay land is better fororcha'ds than land that is very rich in .egetable matter. Sometimes Hal, ivet lands are pre pared for an orchard w ith reputed success in the following way : The ground is plowed in narrow lands, and is backfurrowed where tin trees are to lie planted. The earth is ridged as much as jiossible. The trees are planted on the plowed land, and the earth from the dean furrow is th.own up around thi roots, making a mound. Thu makes the tree linn. livery time the ground is cultivated, the earth is worked toward the trees, aim the dead furrows are kept open. When the tree reaches a bearing age they stand several feet almvi the bottom of the dead furrows Some of tho most successful or chards in the country have been planted this way.
