The people- lived for the state and were the children of the state. They ate at common mess tables, and allowed their business, amusements, diet, and even their marriage, to be controlled by the state. We havo outgrow n the Spartan era, and the melan choly example of that government should make us all the more de termined to stick to the line of policy which lias made our nation the freest, happiest, and most prosperous under the sun." The Spartan nation was an armed camp, as the Constitution saya ; modern nationalism proposes to abolish war and cultivate the arts of peace and progress, which in culcates unselfishness the very opposite of the Spartan methods.
