At the junction of the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers, in Texas, lives a ranchman named Paul Vandcr Toort. One morning Mr. Vander voort noticed a large cottonwood tree which had Mown down, the roots in their npheavel tearing out great masses of earth. The ranch man walked to the spot and picked up a human skull. In life it be longed to an Aztec warrior. Catch ing a spade the man lean to ex cavate, every shovelful throwing out a bone or a weapon or an orna ment. Arrow heads made of stone and obsidian were found, and then a peculiar weapon was tossed on the ground. It was a short metal ax of copper, with blades of glass and edged with flint, which in General Lew Wallace's "Fair Uod" is called a "maqua huitl." No mistaking the tomb now. He was a warrior of Azatlan, this buried man, and his sovereign was Montezuma, for the maqua huitl was never used subsequent to the invasinn by Cortes. Sever al shields finely engraved with owls birds, etc., Boon came out ; then copper knives and stone hatchets, bracelets of ebony, bands of silver, silver armor for the legs, and then a fine helmet, which belonged un questionably to an Aztec army officer. Further on another skull was unearthed, and then suddenly the man who was doing the exca vating shot down out of sight. He had tallen into a small cave, wherein were a number of human and animal bones mixed promis cuously together. The latter lielonged to ocelots, which we now know were trained by the Aztecs to hunt in forest and to right in battle. A number of golden pendants were picked up ; also a large quantity of Monte zuma's wealth, the currency of the day viz. ; small bits of tin cut in shape like the letter T. The strang est part of this discovery is that while the interior appears to have been a tomb or burial spot.yet the situation of affairs would indicate that something has gone wrong, for the bones of one warriors hand firmly clutched a dart with three copper points ; the jaws of another skull were tightly clenched, hold ing between the discolored teeth a small image engraved on agate ; while tha ocelots appear to have been engaged in fierce lights with humans. One ocelot held the severed skull of a warrior in his huge mouth ; a second had his hungry-looking teeth fastened in a man's thigh-bone, and a third brute had literally crushed into crumbs the tbroat-bonesof another man. What it all means no one can eay. The mystery is locked in death, and as the traditions, pictures, writings, etc., of the Aztecs were never preserved, no Mexican of our own time can tell what was meant by these strange actions of his strange ancestors.
