Ciik-aoo, March 27. A disas trous explosion occurred this even ire; iu the Chicago Sugar Kefinerv Company's plant on Taylor and Beath street. 'nn man was fatally hurt ami t enty others severely hnrned. The explosion occurred in tho starch drying room, and is sup posed to have originated; from spontaneous combustion. The building where the explo sion occurred is a two-story brick, separated from tbo main thirteen story building. Twenty-seven men were at work in the room, when without warning there came a tre mendous report, which shattered portions o: tic building, and the machinery was hurled in every direction. Tho workmen were buried beneath the trass of debris, which took lire. The L'GO men who were employed m the main build ing were panic-stricken, ami rushed into the street. A TORNADO IN ILLINOIS. Cairo, March 27. A tornado struck tho town of Metropolis, Ills., this evening, doing great damage to property. Cairo. Ills. March 27. A wind and hai. storm passed over Cairo this morning. No damage was done, but considerable damage is reported from Birdiport, wo., where it is reiwrted several houses were wrecked. Along the Mobile & Ohio railway all the wires from this citv are down, and there is no chance of obtaining further infor mation. Another rope was thrown around its neck and strechedj so tight that it could not move in any direction. Then a strong collar was fastened around its neck, and two log-chains fasten ed to the collar. The ropes were taken oil' and the lion allowed to rise. It was worried so by this time that they were able to hold it without the help of their horses. They mounted, each one holding a chain, and rode into town with the lion lie t ween them. The news was spread and men, women and children rushed out to see the sight. They crowded around dangerously close, but the chains were kept stretched so that there was little danger of any one being hurt.
