Newspaper Page TextSEW MEXICO RAILROADS. Five New Lines Proposed or Coder j Construction. Active work is in progress on five different railway projects in New Mexico, and this work ia of such a nature as to make it reason ably claimed that these lines will be completed during the year. These projects comprise the" line to begin at eome point north of Albuquerque and connect the Rio Grande valley with Durano, Col., and covering a distance oi about 190 miles ; the Pecos Valley Rail way, reaching from Rose well, by way of Eddy, to the Texas and Pacific road, 185 miles ; the Fort Worth-Union Pacific extension from Trinidad through the Max well land grant toward Las Vagas or Taos valley; th? Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe extension from Ortez to San Pedro, and the Hanta Fe Southern Narrow-gauge from Santa Fe, by way of Cerrillos, to San Pedro. These enterprises, if carried out, will increase our railway mileage about 550 miles. They cover sec tions of the Territory that are in great need of railway facilities, and there are business reasons why they should be built. NOTES FROM BROWNSVILLE. Krowssville, March 24. The county surveyor was here last we-k and laid off part of the old Oalbraith farm and part of Thomas Kay's land, some twenty live acres in all, into lots, with i.xty feet streets, and the property is to le put on the market: imme diately. Mrs. Libbie Coshow, Mrs. Judge Blackburn and Mr. E. V. Moyer, all of Albany, are here visiting relating and friends. Last Saturday a horse ."how was held here, and u finer collection of horse lleeh never met in this coun ty. Linn may well feel proud of I her stock. The Odd Fellows urc preparing ior a celebration here, April 20 and it 3 expected to have a large attendance, as we have the finest grounds and grove in this section of the the state. The stock is nearly all subscrib ed for the Brownsville A Eastern railroad, and in a few days, it is expected, a survey will be run up the Calapooia. Mr. Ham McCully, of the Wal lowa valley, is here Aisiting old friends. Mr. MeCully'a mill at Joseph, was destroyed by fire lost fall, but he will rebuild this rummer. K J Accident. fram The Tooth' Companion. An alchemist when experiment ing in earths for the making of crucibles, found that he had in vented porcelain; and a watch maker's apprentice, whilo holding a spetacle glass between his thumb ana forefinger, noticed that through it the neighboring build ings appeared larger, and thus discovered the adaptability of the lens to the telescope. A Nuremburg glass-cutter one day, by accident, dropped a little aqua fortis upon his spectacles, and, finding that .it .corroded and softened the glass, conceived tlte idea of etching upon it. He drew figures upon the glass with varnish applied the fluid and cut away the glass about the drawing. When the varnish was removed, the fig ures appeared-raised upon a dark gronnd. The process of whitening sugar was never known until a hen walk ed through a clay puddle and then strayed in to the pugar house. Her tracks were, of course, left in the piles of sugar ; and when it was noticed that the spots where she had stepped were whiter than the rest, the process of bleaching sugar with clay was adopted. The wife of "an English paper maker one day dropped a blue bag into one of the vats of pulp. When the workmen saw the color ed paper thev were astonished ana their employer was so angry at the mischance that his wife aid not dare to confess her agency in bringing it about. The paper was stored for years as a damaged lot and finally the manufacturer sent it to his agent in London, telling hiin to sell it at any price. Fash ion at once marked it for her own. It was sold at an advanced rate and the manufacturer found it difficult to supply at once the great demand for colored paper. Astoria Folder. in keeping both eyes on Astoria, do not forget that the property of fered bv the Oregon Land Com pany is" no "job lot," to be sold off at auction, but good, sound prop erty, in which the company have invested their on money. The new cable cars run to the corner of ; Ocean Park addition, making this very desirable property. There is also a steamboat landing and a railroad station adjacent to this ad dition. Parties who desire to make investments in the Ocean Park ad dition to Astoria will have to apply soon, as it la being closed out very rapidly and prices advancing. An O. F.
