' Lively Runaway, The team attached to Herbert Townnend'a job wagon ran away on I bird street vesterHav. ThA the tirst weeks of spring, with the prevailing moderate and pleas ant weather, have had the effect of starting the Eastern tourist, on ins annual migration and even' train from the East brings large numbers of the better classes of immigrants who. in most cases. come with capital and a determin ation to make tor themselves and families.amid the groves hills and plains of the "far West" a com fortable honie. Some of them come to pave the way, and locate claims for the establishment of colonies, which in a few months are to arrive, others are settlers with families and still others are timber men from Michigan, who have come out to locate claims, not for specu lation, merely, but to use them for permanent homes. Mr. L. P. W. Quimby, the veteran hotel man of Portland in an interview on the immigration question the other day said : mere has wen an unusually large number of timlier men, mostly irom .Michigan, within th last few days, who have come out to see if they can't better their condition in a financial sense. The majority of them come in, register and leave for different parts of the state. Let me see (and Mr. Quim by glanced over the twenty-five or thirty men who were seated in the office, reading and smoking,) lean count seven men of families among this crowd who have come from Michigan, thinking this part of the country a good place for in vestment, and are looking for favorable claims. As a rule, these men come prett v well supplied with money, and they have no heeitancv in putting it all in circulation, the presence of large numbers of these timber men here laet fall was one of the Crincipal causes of so much monev eing loose about that time. "Yes, sir, I predict for Oregon this year and next, an immense immigration. Why, several days since there was a man from the timber districts of Michigan, who represented a colony handling $3,000,000, and from all I can un derstand, he has returned to re port favorably, so that we may have a very desirable number of families in a few weeks. Yon sec those two young fellows over there? Well, they just came in the other day with letters of recommendation from a man named L. Croft, who stopped here last year for a while. ThoBe young fellows told me that Croft would soon arrivod in -Portland, with a party numbering sixty and would s-ttle on land further south that has already leen selected, and is now ready to tile on. Mr. Quimby says that, it is al uiosi unaccountaoie how some parts of the new state and Oregon are filling up with settlers.
