The play Damon and Pythias at the opera house last night by John S. He possesses a happy fai: lty of bringing out the delicate shades of feeling as wen as tne stronger passages without tearing a passion to tatters, wherein lies ' his great success as a tragedian. II. Hosiers as Dyonisius exhibited some clever acting, as did also Miss ! K lith Lindsay, Miss Marie Annette and Miss Lueda Lindsay in their resjective roles. To-night the company's great play Enoch Arden will be presented, in which Mr. Lmusay wul appear at his best. A Froposi.ion to Iuvest About $75,000 cf Eastern Money in Sewers in Tbis City. u t At tho meeting of the city coun cil last night a proposition was read, which is entitled to more than the passing notice given to it in the regular report of the proceed ings of that body as published this morning. I ine scueme is a oig one, uui ' whether or not it would be w ise to adopt it is a question that can be etter determined alter it is more tiXIv investigated. I he proposj tiin issimplv this: A linn of .v uis proposes to undertake t onstruct in this citv a complete system of sewerage, which will cost from jfoO.OlH) to if 73,000. This the firm proposes to do at little or no cost to the city, but wants a franchise for 23 years, and the right to collect regular tolls from property owners who use the sewers, until such a time as the city can purchase the sewers. The scheme on first considera tion would not seem to be a wise thing to adopt, but when, fully ex plained it may present a dillVrent I aspect. At least there should be no haste in taking action upon such a pioject, especially with a L'-Vycar franchise attached to it. The communication was re ferred to the comniitiee on health and police, who will doubtless con sider it in its different bearings, and make an intelligent report upon the plan proposed. Stale Sunday School Convention. Special to the IIxrald.i Poi:n..xi, March 11. George Becker, the 18-year-old son of Mrs. Emily Hieridan, living at 145 F street, died under very jteculiar, not to say suspicious, circumstan ces, at his home on the morning of Sunday, March 2. Owing to the fact tnat his case assumed the color of poisoning, Drs. Band and Weeler were brought to the bed side of the sufFerer, but too late. Within a lew minutes after the ar iiul oi the'physicians the sufferer was dead. The doctors at once re- lorted the matter to the coroner. n inquest was ordered, and yes terday evening a jury, consisting of YV Hanis, W. L. Higgins, 11. llendie, K. Morrill, W. C. Warren and (i. II. Lumberson, found a verdict, alter listening to the evi dence. After considering the tes- J timony for a due length of time the jury reported as follows : e find that the deceased, George L. Becker, caie to his death on the 'd day of March, 1S!)0, at 145 F street, in the city of Portland, and that he came to his death by a dose of arsenic. The jury is unable to ascertain by whom administered." Parties who are thoroughly ac quainted with the domestic condi tion of the Sheridan family are prone to believe that the young man came to his death by his own hand, and that the partially empty box of Bough on Bats poison con tained the full solution of the mys terious stuff. It is stated that the bov was very closelv related to a woman A bom he dearly loved, and ! that of late she has led a disti-.fect pated careei, and it is the hi; jiosi- lion that upon learning these lacts , the hi h-spirited, intelligent lad o heart was broken with shame, and the prospect of early disgrace drove him to take his own life. The fact that the poison in owdcr form was found in his stomach proves conclusively that the ar senic could not have been taken in liquid form. The mother says she did not see the box of poison till after her son was dead. Deputy District Attorney Simon truthfully said that the city jail is so rot'.en and decimated that it is impossible to detain a felon in the main cell the entire night if the prisoner desires to effect an escape. This statement was . made by Simon when, he learned that II. Bush, a petty thief, had bioken out of the city prison at 3:.'J0 o'clock this morning. Bush used a common stick of wood, which he sharpened with a case knife and dug a hole with it through the rotten brirk and mortar in the rear wall of the ; rison large enough to allow him to squeeze throi.t: -i a vpv short time. 1 In- ".iK"t Operator Is Here.
