The arrival in i Astoria this week of Secretary j Wealherf.ird and Directors .Maston j and YYritssiian, of this road, caused ! something of a flutter in real estate and financial circles. When ao- ' preached by a Morning Columbian j representative, one of the party i said : , "The Albany it Astoria Com i pany has been organized and ccn n i ducted on a purely business basis. it i,.ls i, eonneetion with anvi ntlmr rnniinnv jind ii lint linL-eil I Km! i i Ir ) by men who are too heavily inter : esteil in other roads to care for the ; success of this scheme. As soon i us the weather will permit, engi i neers will be put in the field to J i make the final survey for perma- ! j nent location and set the grade ! ? stakes. j "Construction wili begin at the Astoria end this year, f cannot ; i sav when, but expect it will be ! early in the summer. 1 know it , will be started this yen. It is pos-1 siblc tuat we may start work at the Albany end also, this year, but this is a matter which has not yet leen decided by the directors. We shall begin at Astoria because we can get all of our material and supplies there quickest and cheap est. The Southern Pacific would not care to transport our stuff ar.d the . Oregon Pacific people, while friendly enough, are not able to give us the advantages in tune and rates that we can get by starting froir. Wc have secured all w j need in the way of ground and water front and hive been liberally treated by your citizens. We have the utmost confidence in the future of Astoria, otherwise wo should not build here. President Cowan and Treasurer Lanning will visit Astoria soon and may be willing to talk more fullv about the road. It may be stated in this connec tion that the directors of the Al bany & Astoria company are classed among the wealthiest and most enterprising citizens of the Willamette Valley. They are not loud talkers, nor are they credited with embarking in schemes of doubtful value, hence their quiet determination and business like methods must commend them to the confidence of the public. IN THE COW CREEK CANYON. There Will Bo No Trains fron San Cisco Within Six Wefkf. Fmb- Reports from Ashland state that twenty-tive tnousanu people in Rogue River Valley, who have been for more .ban a month past waiting for the mail from the out side world, have at last been grati fied by the arrival of a mail train with a carload of mail transferred by Dunsmuir. Reports from the wrecking force in Cjw Creek Canyon now indicate that the damages to the railroad are much greater than at first an ticipated. Now it is generally understood that the railroad peo ple have abandoned all hopes of clearing out the big West Fork slide, but will build three miles of entirely new road around it, on the opposite side of the canyon beyond the big slide. Many miles of track will be almost entirely rebuilt also. Railroad officials say that through trains cannot possibly run between Portland and San Francisco within six weeks. In addition to the active work of pushing the road eastward across Eastern Oregon, plans are already laid for some extensive building and improvements to be made by the moneyed men of the company. Foremost among these w ill be a three story brick block on the corner of First and Lyon stn-ets, for winch the plans are al ready drawn and which will be occupied by the offices of the com pany ; also a big hotel and the di visional car and machine shops of the road. Some other important improvements are also contem plated by the company, which wUI no doubt Vie matured during the summer. k.. i..,nL- r r.,r,... i.i.i , . i ..i,.nB u-oro .wi,..?tl fi... i i i -ii- . i ...... 1 . . uaiiK. untitling 10 ue erecieu 1111s i erected this year ; C. . Ayers is the arctutect. The building will be a handsome three-story structure, with a stone front. Its location is on First street adjoining W. F. Read's store. The entire first floor will be occupied by the bank. The second floor will be used for offices and the third story will be uted as a ball for societies. Plans have been drawn for sev eral brick business houses and with the cessation of the winter season active preparations are be ing made for such building. Present indications point certainly to the fact that during the summer of 1800 there w ill be greater piles of brick and stone go into bo-iness tiouses in this city than ever In- fore. The buildings too will be higher and of a more metropolitan style than heretofore. In fact Al bany having long since passed through the successive stages of village and country town, is now entering uoon a period of growth and advancement, becoming the chief city and business center of Oregon. The city is steadily extending her borders, and scores of new residences dot the suburbs in all directions. There is a great tide of immigration to Oregon.
