The FJugone Kei6ter says : One of the most horrible cases of suffer ing reporteil since the high water comes to light on Wild Cat. creek. Mr. George Soven aiid his family, who reside on that fctream, were driven from their home by the rap idly rising water, and lied to a moentain near by for safety. They took with them only a part of their clothing and some betiding. They remained in this condition several days without food or shetier. At last the children's stomachs began to swell, and the father thought they would die. He killed the dog which they ate. They started to cross the mountain to another house, but being thinly clad and without shoes, they were com pelted to retreat on account of the snow. The water finally subsided until they were able to get to the house and get a sack of Hour, which kept them from starving! until relief came. Im Mt. Jefferson a Volcano? In view of the reports that Mt. Jefferson has recently taken to the naughty habit of smoking and has been converted into an active vol cano, County Clerk Montague and Recorder Davis mounted the cupola. of the court house yesterday to obtain a view ol the old moun tain. Their report sounds a triile fishy, but as their veracity is be yond question it must be true. They say thay could see the smoke rising from the summit and could plainly distinguish a llame-like ap larance over the snow at the top of the mountain. (.oltlru Kule ISazanr. In fact I think from general observation, and commeuts of ttie public that as a rule speaks its sentiments without hope of recommendation or fear of censure, that the Albany road is by far the most popular aud certainly commands the confidence of every citizen who is at all conversant with the route aud the character of the company that has the enterprise iu hand. The terminal advantages secured by the company are equal to any on the Columbia river below Tongue Point aud very easy of access j by the road, while the anchorage is j super'or. Now is the winter of our discontent, the snow continues to come down in sections and subdivisions but so dense as to almost obstruct the vision, ar.d thould it prevail throughout the state, will be likely to swell the streams to a greater extent than the last great flood and carry dismay with disaster from McKenzie to the sea. The health of this city is not coo.l owisg to tnc prevalence of la 'rippe and attending diseases and evils that follow invariably in his train, now it is said diphtheria with its poisonous breath and conserous approach, is j making trouble in the ranks of the i littlt ones. But with the coming of the springtime and good weather our : gloom will turn to gladness, aud our j repining will be succeeded by a hope- tuluess that will crown with success all landable enterprises.
