Patrons of the paper will please observe the change. THE MORMON DEFEAT. The defeat of the Mormons iu the municipal election in Salt Lake city means much more than ap pears on the face of it. The city of Salt Lake took a new lease of lite when it passed from the control of the Mormon hierar chy by the free and natural process of popular election. The liberals, as the Gentiles call themselves, had made a very vigorous cam paign, not only before the people, but in the courts, fighting illegal registration of Mormons at every step and rallying their own forces by all the methods known to poli tics. They were so far successful as to elect their mayor by over 800 majority, and to eecure a majority of the council, thus gaining com plete control of the city to the class who a few years ago were in a hopeless minority. This revolu tion in the social life of Salt Lake City for it is rather that than a mere political overturning has undoubtedly been brought about by the active emigration of the last i ew years, by which this as well as other cities on the coast has pro fited. The prediction that the rail roa dwould be the death of Mor monism has been verified in more ways than one. While emigration has contributed to the overthrow of Mormonism in Salt Lake, that overthrow will in tarn stimulate emigration. The fatal objection to the city as a place of residence having been removed, its temper ate climate, natural beauties and advantages of commercial position will doubtless attract capital and population and make it what, from i ts situation, it ought to be, the most considerable city between Denver and San Francisco. There is a growing discontent among nearly all the foreign nations ruled by monarch?. The thrones of the strongest arc in a totlering condition, and the signs of the times indicate that it will not be many years before they will follow Brazil's example, and adopt a republican form of government, not by bloodshed and war, for the people are ready for the change and it will be done quietly. The recent disclosures cf cruel execu tions and the wholesale political murders committed in Russia should hasten the overthrow of that government. Two Mormon elders in Marion county, Georgia, were engaged in making up a party of proselytes for Utah, when they werj notified to leave. They paid no heed, and one night a party of masked citi zens took the holy men into the woods, gave them fifty lashes each, applied tar and features to their bleeding backs, lighted the tar and turned the saints loose. The Mor mon exhorters ran and jumped into a creek. . Even the democratic press do not all uphold the action of the minority obstructionists in the house ot" representatives. The Brooklyn Eagle, one of the stanch est of Democratic exponents comes out in condemnation of the action of the obstreperous members and says that "it would seem to be a rudimentary and essential power of a deliberative body to decide whether it is present for business. If such a decision is at the momen tary mercy, of a few members through a technical falsehood, the possibilities of obstruction are un limited." Bussian cruelties and Russian intolerance continue to be the swaying influence of the Russian government. Tue matter of the Samoau treaty is finally decided by the ratifica- tion of the treaty prepared by the Berlin conference. By it and the purchase of land the United States is made cecure in a coaling station on the island, which is all that was wanted. Secretary Tracy has decided to present a silver service to Chief Parrish of the fire department, and gold watches to Policeman Cattell and Fireman Wright, for their heroic action at the Tracy fire in Washington. Senator Chandler has proposed a bill to regulate immigration into the United States, which is in tended to include the best parts of the various bills now pending. Bouy. Since, however, the people of America and other 'ands have been enabled to pit Uostctter'u 8toma:h Bitters against that unseerj foe, malaria, it is no longer a paradox, but an easy possibility.
