The cutting, filing and polishing of finger nails, for the upper ten ladies and gentlemen of New York, at 50 cts. per head, has became a means of livelihood to many persons. New Jersey and Massachusetts have set the example of raising the salaries of their governors. The contagion may spread until it reaches Oregon and the pay of the governor of this state be made so mewhat in consonance with the extent of our great state. It seems that Oregon City has been the heaviest loser, in the floods, of any of the Willamette Valley cities. Many industries had started up there in the very path of destructive tloods, and have suffered in consequence thereof. It is 'fortunate that the owners of these enterprises, as a rule, were wealthy men, and the plants will be replaced very soon. The Parnell business in Eng land wheiein the Irish leader was accused of divers sins of omission and commission, among others that of improper intimacy with the wife of Capt. O'shea, as asserted in that blatherskite'spetition for divorce, is turning out to be all a tissue of lies from beginning to end. The divorce suit is said to actually be bringing out evidence in hisj favor and will pushed to trial. probable never i e . It mav '-e of interest to know I that all the time we have been bottled up by the Hoods that caused the stoppage of mails, '.he warfare in the house of representatives, by the obstreperous action of the democratic rute or ruin policy, has been going steadily forward. The house meets every day, the demo crats try to obstruct business, Speaker Keed suppresses them with a decision and a little work is done. It does not appear how ever, that any final action has yet been taken on the election cases or that progress has been made with any matter ot legislation. Os the annexation question there continues to be considerable agita tion and consideration. It i3 said that nearly a dozen years ago Mr. Blaine expressed his opinion in the following: ! would. not at tempt to force-annexation or ac quisition of territory i any direc tion; but at the same time I must frankly avow that the incorporation of the British American provinces in our Union would be a vast ad dition to our strength, and a large element added to our growth and perpetuity. No manlier, stionger, abler, better portion of the Anglo Saxon race can be found on the globe than those who inhabit the Dominion of Canada. They are not at present contemplating any union with us, nor are we making the slightest overtures toward them, but the combined growth of mutual interests, the quickened and quickening influence of con stant intercourse, will, in my judg ment, ultimately draw us together. Our relations with them daily grow more intimate ; we are drawn toward each other by a thousand ties of interest, friendship and kindred The question of revising the tariff is one that c.ua out the pocket interest of each individual who expresses an opinion upon it The congressional committee on ways and means, which has the! matter under consideration, are constantly being applied to on the subject. Recently the granite .nnrinrara And stonft cutters QuinCV, JdSSS., 8em U envoy ! 11UVI i.rescr.t their views upon t!:e sub ject. This envoy was Congressman Morse. The senate tariff bill called j for an advance on the present duty : of 25 per cent. He thought the j duty on granite should be advanc- j ed f0 per cent, and he was sure ' that an v man who pretended to ! ,T , ,' Rfa ntl(i I represent Massachusetts, and ! . , . ...... ii... asked tor a lower mux man u.bm,.. present, entirely misrepresented! the state. Mr. Morse said he had in his district, the city of (Juincy, ( 'containing fro.n 12,000 to lo,000 inhabitants. The principal mdus . it try of this city was the manufac- ture of granite; this business emploved a lar?e capital, and gave 1 - " r , - , ... em nloyment to thousands of skill- ed workmen. These men were e ...n: 1 . . - and second to no mechanics in tue countrv ; and since this reduction ' in the duty had been proposed he received a communication troni the uranite gutters inionoi ! Ouincv, composed of more than (00 members, protesting against ....... i ,i,.i: or. any reduction, and demanding an increase of the present duty. It was stated that under the present dutv during the last year $45,950 . . , rranite came to - . , Boston alone; and in the name of his constituents he demanded that thev should be protected against ! this large importation. So each interest urges its own claims. One effect of the losses by flood will be the replacing of old struct ures which were taken out by new and better ones, making repairs that in many cases were necessary but that would have been put off if the high water had not taken them out rendering their replacement imperitive. Probably, too, in the most of cases the new structures will be made stronger and placed safer locations as far as practicable. The result of the election in Salt Lake, giving as it does a decesive victory to the gentiles cannot but be conducive of good results. NEW TO-DAY. "This was sometime a paradox," as Uamlet says. Since, however, the people of America and other ,'and.s have been enabled to pit Ilostetter's Stomach Bitters against that unseen foe, malaria, it is no longer apnradox, but an easy possibility. Whatever malaria evolves its misty venom to joison the air, and decaying unwhole some vegetation impregnater the water, there, in the very stronghold of miasma, is the auxiliary otent to disarm the fou und assure efficient protection. Fever and ague, bilious remittent, dumb igue and ugue cake, no matter how tenaciously ihey have fastener their clutch on the system, are first forced to relax their grasp and eventually to abandon it alto gether. But it ir preventive force that 6honld chiefly recommend the Bitters to persons dwelling in malaria "urscd localities, for it is a certain buckler of defence against which the enemy .s powcilcss.
