The storm has so prostrated the
wires that the Hekald is unable to
furnish its regular telegraph report
thin morning. A few dispatches
caught from tlie crippled wires con
cerning the storm and the con
dition of the railroads is all that
could be oltair.ed last night.

county with water and light, means
a great deal in advancing the ma
terial prosperity ot the town, luo
incorporators nanes give the corn
pany a standing, aside from the
urgent need of such enterprise. II.
liirschberg is president of the Inde
pendence National Bank ; A. Nel
son is a wealthy land owner ; A. J.
Goodman is a large dealer in hard
ware; 11. H. Jaspinson owns the
sash and door factory here, and J.
Downsife is a successful stock
grower. Just as soon as the
weather will permit H. Thielson,
the well known civil engineer, has
been engaged to survey the route
of the motor line railway to 3ion
mouth, distant two miles.
When he finishes that work he
will survey a water ditch from
Buena Vista to Independence, and
if it is found, as stated, 14 feet fall
can be cbtained. Soae inn. of
abundant means stand ready to
issist the company recently or
tranized and build the ditch, l'rc
vious surveys have given 14 feet
fall at Independence. Air. -Ihuu-
sen's known experience will pre
vent any expensive mistakes. 11
Mr. Thielscn thinks the water
ditch is practicable it will be built
at once and a first-class electric
light plant be ordered, not only to
liuht Independence and Mon
mouth, but also furnish poAer lor
the railway and light machinery.
Should the water ditch prove to lie
unmanageable, water wheel will
be placed in the Luckiainute, live
miles from Independence, and
power and light conveyed to town
on wires, and it is possible that a
water supply for the town will be
obtained from the same source.
Whatever may be the result it is
certain that this company will in
augurate some important improve
ments in the joint of the water
and light supply of Independence.
At present the town has an insulli
cient water supply by means of a
small pump lrom a well, raising
wat"r into a tank 50 feet above the
Alain street.
J. A Veness, of the firm of I'rcs
cott & Veness, who owns the saw
mill here, finds that even when
high water comes in the Luckia
nute liver there is a great deal of
expf-n.se attached to getting out the
logs that way, and he is my re favor
ably inclined than ever towards a
logging railroad iipthe Luckianuie.
This lirm is rated at Braist net's
agency at $1)0,000, so that their
favor means something. The dis
tanco to timber is only 14 miles at

He Sets Himself Right s to the Ac
quisition of Lower California.
Los Anceles, Cal.. Jan. 31. Gov
ernor Waterman in a conversation to
day said: "The other day a news
paper" printed an interview with me
about the acquisition of Lower Cali
fornia and some Mexican states by the
the United States It was alleged
that I had declared myself in favor
of acquiring the territory in question
by force of arms if necessary. The
fact of the thing is, I never said any
thing of the kind. The whole thing
is a tissue of lies, aud has placed me
in a very awkward position. It is
true I am in favor of cur government
acquiring Lower California and the
states of Chihuahua and Sonora from
Mexico by purchase, but when it
comes to annexing them without the
consent of the Mexican government
and by force of aims, then I am out.
I am irreatly opposed to any such
policy. Why, it would be like a
great, hig overgrown boy jumping
onto a very small baby.

was made last night to blow up the
residence of Father Fleckinger, in
charge of the German Catholic
church at Chartiersborough, in this
county.
Dynamite was pluccdin thecellai
and about 1 o'clock this morning
the house was badly wrecked and
the whole neighborhood aroused.
Father Fleckinfter and two servant
girls wcic iu the house, but escaped
unhurt, but were badly shaken up.
