Mrs. Murray had remoistiated with the Mongolian about the man ner in which he did the work.when lie became very angry, and when Mrs. Murray told him to leave the hotel he seized a cleaver used for cutting meats, and started after her threatening to kill her. She fled into another room, and avoided him. The China.r.an was arrested and lodged in jail to await examination in Justice Humphrey's court Mon day, on a charge of an assault with a dangerous weapon. Cold Weather In Kastern Oregon There is no use trying to conceal the fact that Eastern Oregen is now experiencing a very severe winter. bnow has been on the ground con tinuously fr r over six weeks, and out on ttie hills and elevated ranges it is now nearly a foot aver age depth. It is so badly drifted in many pl&ces that stock'wiil not attempt to travel through it, and thus they become discouraged, and do not nustle lor leeci. The conse quence is that a considerable loss of live stock is sure to be sustained even if the snow should go off im mediately. It is not always the deep snow that the stockmen fear to much. The weather has not been unusually cold, but on the contrary has several times been warm enough to cause the snow to melt, and then afterwards freeze, thus covering the ground with ice. Tire present winter is a hard one, and at present there is no indica tion of a favorable change. Ochoco Review. ItasMell-.Fewell Dramatic Co. This excellent company will ap pear at the opera house in this city to-morrow evening. The Seattle Post-Intelligence says of them: "Lynwood" is a strong play that gets full justice at the hands of Miss Lizzie Lingham and her fine company. There was a good audi ence present last night at the opera house to see this great play, and if applause is any evidence ot appre ciation they showed it enthusiastic any. Miss .Lizzie L.ingham, as Lucille Carlyle, showed herself a perfect actress. Miss Jennie Dar rah's songs, dances and character sketches, sent the house into roars of laughter. She is the cleverest soubrette that has appeared here in years. Mr. Frank Cleaves, as the villain of the piece, f Dud ley Middleton, was truly detestable that is. he played the part to such good purpose that the larger part of the house hated him heartily for the time. Mr. Sam Morris, as Carter, the correspondent, was in imitable, and his witticisms and antics kept the house merry. Those desirous of seeing really good acting should make use of the opportunity presented to-night and to-morrow evening, in standard pieces. "The Mountain Waif" will be played to-night In tb?s piece the company is said to te particularly strong, and it will be a good chance to see them at their best. Santlam Lumbering Company. Articles of incorporation have been filed in the Marion county clerk's office by the Santiam Lum bering Company, with W. II. Hob son, Lee Brown, Thsmas Sims and John A. Shaw, incorporators; capital stock, $20,000. This is the companv owning the big lumber ing mill at Mill City and the mem bers are well known as men of re sponsibility and in every way re liable. They have at Mill City one of the best mill plants in the state, with a fine timber country all around them, and it is only a ques tion of a short time until the' will have lumber yards established all along the valley. Arrested for Polygamy. Chief of Police John Hoffman left last night for Oakland, Oregon, after one F. J. Bell, arrested there on a charge of polygamy. Bell was recently married to a young lady of Linn county named Beard, while he already had a wife and family at Roseburg. He will be brought to this city to answer for the crime. Land Sold. The old Smith & Brasfield cor ner at Harrisburg, belonging to the Hiram Smith estate was sold at sheriff's sale in this city yesterday to Mrs. Dr. W. h . Mendenhall for $800. One-half of the John Mc Coy farm was sold at administra tor's sale to Robert L. Smith at $28.50 per acre. It contains 305 acres. On tbe Blver. LETTER FED ASTORIi. The Albasy it Astoria Railway Has Many Wara i'riecds Dewa hj the Sea. ' Astokia, Jan. -o. For a couple of weeks your cor- respondent has been dodging around trying to evade ia grippe, ! the prevailing distemper that i seems to be making a tour of the world, and taking in Astoria on his route, or at least reminding Astorians that he is here, and if the present cold and disagreeable weather holds o:i much longer he is likely to stay for some time, unlike Nellie 1'ly in her trip around the world living . from station to station and "skipping from conti nent to island and across the track less ocean to the palace car, and the stool rad that lands her safe at home again. La grippe is a nuis ance that like all unwelcome visitors seems in no hurry to de part. Several of onr citizens are sutfering, while some have passed away. The railroad muddle has finally been settled, it is said, and when the weather permits the work will begin again in good earnest with a view to finishing and equiping tin. road to the sea side in time for summer travel. The government appointments do not give satisfaction by any means to those whose interests are at stake, and whose political opinions should be considered in the selections of such officers be cause they being the people whose votes made it possible for the Ore gon delegation to dictate to the president their choice of incum bents for the custom house and post office, why should the desires of petitioners be 6et at naught, and men selected who are not the choice of the people. In fact the postmaster is recommended for an office he did not want, and says he did not seek, while those that did waut it and worked hard to obtain the same, are snubbed by an un just and unworthy silence by those who had the matter in hand, and had promised to see fair play ac cording to the merits of the peti tion, and the respectability of h s references. The terrible storm that is pre vailing now makes things look blue indeed, and now the snow is tail ing fast and with fair prospect of coming to stay. Mails have been irregular, but there will undoubt edly be a blockade that will stop them all together. Business is almost entirely suspended, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores and butcher shops excepted. The multitude must be fed even if the storm continues fort' days and nights. Real estate is frozen up, and the dealer therein is terribly disgusted with the beautiful snow. It does seem that not only Portland, but providence is conspiring to check are little boom and chill our ardor in our attempts at anything like progress toward the rank our posi tion and our resources justify us in assuming as a city. A flouring mill and another large saw mill is now talked of favorably. The latter by eastern capitalists. The Albany, Tillamook and Astoria railroad is much talked of, and is gaining friends very fast. The line will be a far more popular one with the traveling public than the south coast road through Nehalem, and its cost of construc tion will certainly be very much cheaper per mile. The Lindsay dramatic troup is here endeavoring to make us for get our troubles and the bad weather by their pleasant enter tainments. ft rami Army Encampment. The ninth annual encampment of the Oregon department will con vene at Eugene at 2 :30 r. sr. Wed nesday, February 12th. The an nual convention of the Women's Relief Corps will be held at the same time and place. The annual encampment promises to be one of tl-e most interesting held in the state, and all the comrades are cordially invited to be present and enjoy the hospitality and liberality of the members. A large and active committee of comrades of the G. A. R. and ladies of the W. R. C. of Eugene, are engaged in securing and preparing entertain ment and making all arrangements for the encampment. A hearty and earnest welcome will be ex tended to all visiting comrades. The railroads of the state have all offered to transport members for one one and one-fifth fare for the round trip. A number of delegates will attend from this city. Important Kallroad Store. It is stated on what seems to be good authoritv that the Orezonian, or Narrow Gauge railroad is to be widened into a standard gauge road, and extended from Coburg to snrineneld in Lane county, borne officials of the road have recently made a trip to the latter place, and it is believed by many that the plan is to extend the line up the middle fork of the Willamette, thence south-east across the moun tains to a connection with the Cen tral Pacific road. The new pro prietors of the Narrow Gauge road certainly intend to improve it, and if it is widened it will give Albany direct rail connection with a scope of country through the upper and eastern portion of the Willamette valley, and probably another trans-continental line. Have Incorporated ' Articles of incorporation have been filed with the secretary of state of the Ladies's Aid Society of a II lit. r t f- J Albany, with M. J. Kellv nroni. dent, Cora Hopkins secretary, Mrs. T V nloln- n. : 1 i t' . L. E. Blain vice-president, Kate Althouse treasurer ; value of the property, $500. The recent en couragement giyen to their proposi tion to erect an orphans' home in this city insures the success of the enterprise, and the value of their property will soon be materially increased. flE SNOW BLOCKADE The Situation cn the Southern Pacific Is No Better. OVERWHELMED L THE SNOW The Fires DraJ in the Ecgines-Scarcity of Proyuiwefor the Men and tbe fas Et n" rs- The Wires Down. Dispatches from California and Southern Oregon contain the most gloomy news concerning the block ade. Sissons and Dunsmuir are cut off from approach either" way, and there i.s no road open above Sims. Eleven engines are said to be lying dead at these places, the tires having gone out, there being no wood cr water that Coil be used. Provisions are almost gone, and it is probable that food will have to be carried in on snow shoes for the passengers. The Western Union reports all direct wires to San Francisco still down south of Riddles. Snow is deep and men can make but one and a half miles an hour at best. Telegrams from San Francisco say a bad slide north of Sims wrecked all wires. The linemen will reach the wreck from the south to-night. Wires are badly damaged through tbe Sacramento canyon. There is no prospect trial the railroad w ill be in operation to San Francisco for several days. The Pacific Pos tal Telegraph Company's wires to San Francisco are still down, but the most extraordinary efforts are being used to get them inwoiking order. The storm nas been one of the most severe this company has" had to contend against, and gangs of men are at work repairing the breaks at different points. There is a bent out of the trestle at Roseburg, which prevents travel south of there. It was expected to have it repaired by this morning. Mr. Brandt is somewhere between Riddles and Ashland. He will probably stay at the front until the road is clear. It is thought that Colonel Crocker has been able to get back to San Francisco. A train from Roseburg will reach Albany about noon to-day. Iiandmann as Hamlet. The presentation of Hamlet by Daniel E. Bandmann and his tal ented company on their return en gagement at the opera house last evening was witnessed by a large and delighted audience. Sohearty was the applause at the close of tbe third act that the eminent tragedian and Miss Oliver received a well deserved curtain call. Miss Ells worth as Ophelia also exhibited a charming bit of acting. Mr. Band mann has surrounded himself with a talented company of artists, who are able to play Shakespeare in a most acceptable manner. Mr. Bandmann himself is certainly en titled to a leading position in the dramatic world. Got Into Deep Water. Dr. A. J. California Mails. Another big lot of delayed mails arrived i.i this city at noon yester day. It was the first lot of Califor nia mail forwarded by steamer, and included all mails from the loth to the 20th. The mail of the 14th is still in the blockade, the San Francisco mail of the 13th being the last regular mail received here. Will Settle the Kill. A telegram was received yester day by the authorities here from the father of Kate and Hatlie Mat- toon, the girls of Drain who came to grief in their wholesale stealings in this city, stating tnat lie would arrive to-day and pay for all the goods taken.
