The coach was crowded witn passengers who filled the eais, and, as is usual in leaving Fast Portland the aisle was also filled. Among the passengers were a number of gentlemen from this city. Among them was Mr. C. K. Wolverton, who was standing with bis hands ti'Ied wit., packages. Feeling a strange hand in his liocket, he quickly whirled around and caught a stranger in the act ol removing his purse, containim: about !;0, from the back pocket of his pants. He caught the pick pocket and accused him of having the purse but he denied the ac cusation, .-ta'ing, no ever, that he thought it was on the floor, and there it was found. The thief, upon finding he was caught, had dropped it to avoid complete exposure and arrest. Three of his conL'derates crowded arotr d and loud talking prevaded until women nearly taint ed and men prepared to 'rp be hind .s-ats in the event, of promis cuous shooting. Astoria, Dec. 20, 1889. Like the ceaseless title that ebbs an flows beneath our wharves and under our business streets, so coines the tide of enrious men to see and feel, to learn and know, the causes of the present amount of activity in real estate. Some come to buy, some come t study the cause and the effect, some come heeau?e their restless dispositions impel them irresistably to follow in the wake of any and every throng. Albany and AsJoria are now deeply interested in each other's prosperity. We want to reach the rich agricultural portion of Oregon ami to onnect with the railroad center of the state, and you want to reach our barb r. The question naturally arises as to w he' her this- nhenominal growth of any city is justified by i.s suirouniiings and luture pins peels. Astute for seeing business men say ye. There is an absolute necessity that Oregon should have a scMitori, where the merchant marine of the world may enter and depart at pleasure and with the least possible expense, where rail roads may terminate and find a reatiy market lor ineir ifeigm v here commerce may not be hampered by bars anil headlands, but may have frets coins'! to go w hithersoever it will till like Tvre f old, all nations of the earth "hall bejome tributary to her, and Astoria's merchants like Tire's merchant princes may deal with til nations and corresoiid in all tongues, while the fonage of every commercal people may discharge i heir cargoes up on our docks in exchange for the products of our soil or mines. Who can foresee or portend I he future of a city whose access is so free and safe. Albany wide awake to her ow n interests knows full well that the time is ripe for her to look well to her future. She already has an outlet at Yaquiua and the Tila inook toad will give her another direct route, and one whose way side stations will throng with passengers, and overflow with the pioducts of that new and rich region. The route is utidotibtedlv one of the fines t in Orej. while its cheapness of comtr'....;..!! will prove a surprise to the company whose wisdom has secure J it loea'ion and foreseen its great im portance. The ocean beach in many places offers fine opportuni ties for summer resorts equal to any on tue coast, anil easily access able from the densely populated hstiict of the valiey and the wanner, dryer regions east of the cascade range. During the past week J. L. Cowan, piesident of the Albanv Astoria road. has beeu here with both eyes open accompanied by J. K.
