One of the veins or lodes was uncovered for a distance of about fifty feet up the gulch before it dipped into the earth. While uncovering thi3 top lode auother lode was discovered, but it prob ably leads to the head canter or mother lode. The lodes discov ered varied in thickness from three to six inches. Men are employed in ''going down" and opening up tbe lind, and in a few days we shall probably knew as to the value of it. The coal looks well, and is pronounced first rate by judges. A Tr-.o to the Front-Tbe Wcik B;iig Pc3he4 Toward the Scnmit. A special train, with General Manager Hoag, and about twenty citizens rf Albany and a few from Corvallis, on board, left this city at 8 o'clock Sunday morning for the front on the Oregon Pacific railroad. Among the number was representative ol the iierau. The object of th trip was simply for a tour of observation along.the newly completed portion of the load and of the work in progress. The day was a most stormy ne, but the members of tlin party v. ere Oregonians, and went provided with overcoats and umbrellas. At Mill City a stop of :t mirier of an hour w:ifi made in order to afford time to look throujjh the splendid sav-ni:ll -it ihsit 1; ice n; inexhaustible water power i: plied from the Sanliain river, and ; the mills employ about 50 men,; with a capacity of 40,000 or 50,000 , feet of lumber per day. Two miles above this is the ina- . tjterial vard, where the first evi- dences of railroad work was noted. A long train load of rails ties, and other material was standing up ;i a side track ready to 'o to the front ... No further stops were made ; Breitenbush was reached.; until JLsreitentHisn was The road passes lor several miles through a very rocky canyon, which has evidently been the most expensive pott ion 'of the road to build, as one deep rock cut is passed after another at clo.-e intervals Near Bzeitenbush is considerable : level b ttioni land. The wholy country for miles around i cover-' e ! with the finest yellow lir timber to be found in Oregon. A number i ol squatte claims have been taken on each side of the road. About lour miles beyond Breiten bush the end of the track was reached. The train was stopped a few hundred vards from the end of 1 track, further progress being npeited bv the hoarding cars, a hich stood upon the track. The . party sallied out from their com- lortah'c coach, and with their trousers rolled up and umbrellas dripping from the steady downpour i ot rain proceeded single-hie aion the trail to the very end of the track. Beyond this the grade, all ready for the ties and rails, stretched away out of sight around, a curve toward the summit. Man ager lloag said this was CO miles from Albany, and that it was o5 miles to the summit. Of that dis tance abmt 10 miles is alreadv j graded, a portion of it at this end ana a small portion at the summit, irliarii l f.it ittilrkt ( fr.w.L io nlov Idj(j ,n adaition to tms ft force of lOOd men, under Orman ik Crook, are now finishing up another 10 miles of grading. This leaves but 15 miles of untouched work west of the summit, and before the people in the valley are hardly aware of it the road will pass the summit, and continue on its way through East- em uregon toward an eastern con nection, a consummation in which the people of Albany aie specially interested, ami lor which thev will in the future, as in .the past, show their earnest aid and sympathy. The country at that distance up in the Cascade mountains is not provided with many public con veniences, and there was no hotel short of ten or fifteen miloa away, but the party was invited by Mr. Hoag to dinner in the boarding cars. As it was considerably after the usual time for the midday ineal, no time was lost in accept ing tlie invitation. A noteworthy fact in connection with the work of construction is the substantial and superior man ner in which the road is built. The bridges are all of the most approved workmanship, and the roadbed is broad and well ballasted, being built as all transcontinental roads are, in a strictly first-class manner. The train glided smoothly over the steel rails, and a few minutes Be fore T o'clock the brakeman popped his head into the car and shouted, 'Albany.'' Astoria, Dec. . T tnr EiTR or tub Hkrili: A letter from Astoria may be of interest to your numerous and in telligent readers, who are anxious to learn what is taking place in this old town, that is just deginning to awake from its long Hip Van Winkle like snooze, and take a ! tumble to itself, vulgarly speaking, i as the future great seaport city of j Oregon and the Inland Empire i that is seeking an outlet for her j products and a highway for her commerce with the nations of the world. Booms like cholera and iiwall pox seem to be contagious, but un like these diseases are to be sought for rather than avoided, and now As.toria like Albany and some other towns, having caught the disease, if not checked, it will soon become epidemic, while the real c?tate dealer and capitalist from other tewns in the far away East or our immediate neighbors of this very new West rush in to avail themselves of the golden opportu nity that they seem to think only comes to a man once in a lifetime, And like the man of Scripture that went down from Je:u-aleni to Jericho and fell anion,;- r r,l cttate dealers, theyj co ;:n 1 tl.vy find that the half has nut been told them.
