Din Joses Writes His Vuws Cinceming Affairs at Santa Monica. The folloning letter lias been re ceived by the j. A. If. post of this city : Santa Monk a, Nov. 21. Comrades: John Bryant has gorfc to town this morning for my papers, and 1 will write a few lines to let you know that we are well and able to eat our full rations, which this rooming consisted of hash, bread and butter with weak coffee. Our dinner will be a stew, minus the butter, and supper will i be bread, butter and tea. To tell a poor I; you the truth it is rather house t board in at present, and it is getting no belter. I have been here five months, and in that time ! there has not ben ten crnod meals set on the tables for us. The best ! rations are served on Sunday, and that is but a common laboring man. have not done a meal for a ! days work ii ere. ior ine reason that mere are able-bodied men enough here to do all the work to be done by reliefs. One relief will work a month, pet their pay, and go on a drunk t..i their cash is gone and then they a.e readv lor the next month. It i-i but a small amount they get per month jrom $4 to $10, but i: it w;. f-.m u -Aoiiiu in- me same, it ; nay be a good thing, for the reason t that it has taken a lot of drunks from the country and put them here together, and ihev allhct but, a small port on i There are but a h.w port on of the eople. ood men here, ami uiey are asmitneu oi the way they have to live and the company they have to keep. There - are some here that have been in the different soldier.-.' homes of the country. They are called "toursts" by the men here. It is my belief that no man who can act like a gentleman in a civilized commu nity has anv business here. But t i . it he is past all respect for himself 1 i .....I .. 1 .1 . 1 . I . I 1 : aim unlet men mis is me mace ki irhllll. The surf-bathing season here and the town is dead I ls,?v"r i llierC; are but a few visitors at the home new. People have found that nearly all of the inmates are here from the elfects of drink, and they have but little respect for us, and lean t blame' them. The people here are altogether different from those of Oregon. They have no use for a man if he has no money. They have nothing to sell but barley and real estate the former cheap and the latter for all they can get, from $100 to $."0' per acre. During October about ten inches of snow fell, and the country is as green as Oregon in May. The climate is as line in the winter here as any country in America. We have had no frost, snow or cold winds, and the fos have been light since the lirst of October, but they will come aL'ain with Feb ruary and last till October again. John Bryant says he has got all of California he wants, and I can say the same for myself. 1 here are about 400 men here, and they are going and coming. I Inue explored the country aiound here lor a radius of 10 miles, farm in I'o the east there is irood land, on the north moun- tains and bee ranches, and to the west Santa Mrnica and the broad Pacific ocean. Los Angeles is a city of humbugs and swindles. They have boomed as long as they can, and it has returned to them with a boomerang, and they are waiting for people to come here from the East, and build the town up with winter residences. There has been more crime in this county in the last live months than in all Oregon. This seems to be where all criminals assemble. I have noticed ll'7 reported in jail at one time, and there arc not half as many there as there should be. I am getting tin .1, and you will be by the time you rea l this. I remain as ever your comrade. Daxiix If. Jones. REPUBLICAN CITY CONVENTION.
