Treat, ore of the largest stockholders in the Nicaragua Canal, now here, says: "1 have just received news from Nicaragua tnat the preparatory work on the canal is being pushed as rauidly as is possible, ine first trouble with which we meet is the dilliculty in landing ships at Grcytown. We are working with every energy, and are now building a breakwater and docks. The contract for the construction of the canal from tha Caribbean sea to lock 1 is to be let in a few days. "The talk that trouble between Nicaragua and Costa Kica is likely to endanger tho construction of the canal is ail wrong. Salem has no direct lino to a seaport except the inland port at Portland and there fore no competition, The most feasi ble route for the capital city, shorter, more easily constructed, and a nearer point to San Francisco is to build a road through Kings valley down the Siletz to Newport, tapping the As toria & Albany road and the west side system cf the Southern Pacific. A large subsidy could be secured for the construction of this real in I 'oik county and on this bay. THE NEVADA LINE. A New Survey Gives California a Large Strip of Land. Sacramento, Nov. 23. The report of the commissioners appointed by t Surveyor General Reichcrt to resur ! vey the boundary line between Ne j vada and California have made their report. By it California gains a strip over 200 miles in length and threi quarters of a mile wide, cutting through Lake Tahoe and going sonth till it strikes the Vou bclinmH monu ments of 1873 on the Colorado river, Which a found t be correct. The Oceanic steamer Zealandia arrived from Bvdney and Auckland via Honolulu at noon to-day. She re ports that as she was entering the harbor at Honolulu on Nor. 10, Prof. Van Tassel, the balloonist, made an ascension from the 6hore and dropped from his balloon in a parachute. He fell into the ocean about two miles from the shore and one mile from the steamer. He was then seen no more, and it is supposed that he was eaten by sharks. Van Tassell recently gave performances in Oregon and left San Francisco a few weeks ago for Honolulu and Australia, where he expected to give exhibitions. SANTIAM mines. Improvements to tho Gold Moun tain and Dry Guleb Property. An Oregonian reporter recently eame across E. 11. Flemmiog, general manager, and R. H. Miller, vice president and treasurer ot tho Gold Mountain & Dry Gulch Gold and Silver Mining Company in Portland. "The improvements to our prop erty are progressing finely," said Mr. lemming, in reply to the reporter's quay, "and I am confi dent that the development of our mine will surprise even these wh have bad the highest opinion of Oregon's mineral resources. The mine is located on Dry Gulch in the Santiam district. We have just completed the survey of an eight mile flume to extend from the Santiam river to the mouth of Dry Gulch, up the gulcb, and over the top cf Gold mountain. The flume will have a fall of 340 feet. "We have everything in readi ness for scttiug up the sawmill. The machinery is bought, and we are only waiting for the comple tion of the toll road between Ga'es and Quartzville. to get it to the mines, 'lhc mill will have a thirty horse pewer engine, a daily capa city d 15,000 feet, and will cost a little over $3900.
