Kaum, tbe newly appointed Commissioner of Pensions,, is in charge of the Pension office to day. Gen. Raum is a man of national representation; he served one term in tbe House ef Representatives from tne inincenui Illinois uisirict, uui his greatest reputation was gained as Commissioner of Internal Revenue, a position he ably filled from 1SC7 to 1SS3. His acceptance of the office is a ,'reat surprise here, as it is well known that ke gaye up ajlaw practice wcrth more than double the salary of the of:e. It is generally believed among republicans that he accepted thefofiice to relieye the President from a very embarassing possition. Gen. Raum has a splendid war record, and is an enthusiastic work ing member of the G. A R. His ap pointment has, I honestly believe given more real and general satisfac tion hero than any one made by the President. The following may be taken as specimens of the way it is received by prominent republicans Senator Mitchell A good appoint ment, I should say so. Like it? Why I am delighted. Senator Man derson An excellent appointment. It is a happy solution of all our woes, Gen. Raum is a good lawyer, a good soldier and e good citizen. R preseu tative Bayne There could have been no better solution of the question. Gen. Raum is a man of great execu tive ability. His judgement is 'sound, and having confidence in it, he is never afraid to do what is rfght. i . - , .Representative Anaerson toi nansas, Gen. Raum was a gallant soldier. There is to doubt of where bis sym pathies lie. At the same time he is a man of good judgment and of long experience in a department of the Government where lie was trained in the execution of the law. Ex-Commissioner Tanner I think it is a splendid appointment. Representa tive Burrows It is capital! capital. It could not have been better. Ex Representative Goff It is a superb appointment. Ex-Senator Bruce An excellent appointment. The local G. A. R. men are tickled almost to death over the appoirtment. (Jen. Raum was net a applicant for the position. His name was presented to the President by "Secretary Rusk and Senator Mitchell, at difi'ertnt times, and unknown to each other. Secretary Windom has settle! the dispute over the admission of silver lead ores from Mexico by deciding to stand be cx-Secrctary Sherman's classification, which admits them free. Postmaster General Wanamaker incurred the ill-will of some Virgin ian repablicans. This is how: In 1SSG a colored laborer from Virginia named Hunter was removed and hia place uiven to a white democrat from the same state named Wreun. Some Virginian republicans called on Mr. Wanamaker to urge that Hunter bo put back into his old place, and were thunderstruck when the Postmaster General replied as follows: "I ap preciate the interest shown in behalf of Mr. Hunter, and I regret that I have not the time to o over the case with you. But so far as Mr. Hun ter's republicansim is concerned, that alone shall not weigh in hia favor, cor shall the democracy of Mr, Wreun operate against bin." "But"; remarked oni of the delegation, "Wrenn's politics got him in." "I know" replied Mr. Wanamaker "They (tho democrats) would turn us oat, but I shall not pursue that course. "Nice sort of a republican Wanamaker i . said one of the Virginians as they came out.
