Gov ernor White ia in receipt of an olli cial report from Washingtou of the recent Indian trouble on the Flat head reservation. It gives the Indians' side of one of their tribe last summer. From all reports the trouble is not yet over. The farm ers residing in the vicinity of the leservation have prepared petitions to the governor for protection. They claim that a band of the Indians frequently get drunk and roam restlessly around, threaten ing to avenge the loss of their mur dered brother. Investigation into tho case shows that tlie Indians obtain their liquor from some of the white people in the vicinity. The complaints have been some what numerous of late, and the governor has recommended that two companies of soldiers be sta tioned on tho reservation. The ranchers' and fanners' wives and children are uneasy whenever the Indians become boisterous. THE PENSION t'ONTKOVEKS Y. Farther Dcvt-loimientt of Interest l ikely to Ensue. Washixi-.-ox, Oct. iM. It i- thought the controversy between Secretary Noble and Corporal Tan ner over the hitter's management oi the pension uiliee is not yet at an end. Jt is understood that more letters and further corres pondence will be published, and that the subject is likely to occupy considerable public attention dur ing the week. More feeling is evi dently entertained by the parties directly interested than on the part of the public, for, as far as the body of the people is concerned, very little feeling is expressed. There is a regret among his friends that ex-Commissioner lanner lias said so much on the subject, and his admirers havo very materially decreased in number. Miss Tan ner, daughter of the late commis sioner, still holds the position of confidential clerk to commissioner of pensions. AT THE BAYONET'S POINT. Tracklayers Drlran Back from Ok lahoma by U. 8. A Washingtou dispatch nys the Assistant Coiimiissiouer Stone ren deic.l a decision in a case which in volved the question of proof on school indemnity selections ia Oregon. Oregon waa granted every sixteenth and thirty-sixth section of land for school purposes. The law also pro vided iu case any of these lands had been entered under the Public Land laws prior to the dale of the grant, that the (State should bo eutitled to indemnity therefor, and might make indemnity selections from any un occupied public lands. Iu pursuance of this authority the State, it ap pears, selected in the aggregate large tract upon which expected pre emption tilings were of record. The question at issue was whether the burden of proof of the fact that the tilin'8 expired rested with the State or witl. the parlies who made the filings. The assistant commissioner holds in favor of the State, and has directed that in all such exses the pre-emptor shall be required to ap pear before the local land officers within twenty days after the receipt of notice and show cause why the entry shall not be cancelled, thus throwing the burden of proof upon the entrymcn. It is said that there are a large aumber of cases in the General Land Office which will thus be disposed of. A Lost Art. Ircn A?e. Tempering copper is one of the lost arts which has been actively sought for by scientists and mechanics for years. The process has been acci dentally discovered, and tests of the quality of the copper thus treated have shown most remarkable strength and wearing qualities. It will be especially valuable for use in the bearings and commutators of dynamo machines, aud also for the journals of locomotives and cars. An establish ment in Pennsylvania is now placing the metal upon the market. EXPECTED TO-DAY. It is the rankest kiud ot' rot and is liable to give a printer blood poUouing if he handles much of it. "There weie twenty printers and six liar , each a full Hedged Ananias, working in the place. Tbe liars sat at a table in one end of tbe room grinding out those un- wbolsonie stories ui last as we could put them ia type. One day I got a wad of copy that was posi tively sickening. It was about a lovely tin who had been captured and torn from her home by a heart less white desperado and Disband f bloodthirsty Apaches. The girl was in a desperate fix. She either had to marry tbe villaia or become his wife, he din n't care wbicb, and he was then on his way to a cave ia the mountains, where he was eoing to have the ceremony performed. "That aight they camped in a rocky gorge 209 miles from no where and bonnd the unfortunate maiden to a tree with the usual buckskin thongs, which cut deep into her tender wrists. Then ail laid dewa and went to sleep. In the meantime Old Zeke, the Hairy Scout, who was on the trail, sneaked up just at daylight, when people sleep the soundest. Zeke sailed in and killed twenty-five or thirty Indians with the butt end of his trusty rifle. He didn't want to shoot for fear he would waken the others. Then, after he had cut a notch for each corpse on his gun stock and hung the coarse, black scalp-locks to his belt, he released the girl, hoisted her under his arm, jumped into the saddle and rode away. "He rode at full speed for forty -eight milfs without stopping. When night closed iu the bold scout pulled rein and went iuto camp. Frst he picketed his horse, then built a lire, fixed a cot of leaves for the girl, and got her something to cat out of his saddle bags. This was where I got iu my work. "The first thing Zeke took out of the bags was several thick slices of fresh Vienne bread with honey ou them. Next came cold boiled ham, cut tbin, an apple pie with a short, crispy upper crust, and last a tender spring chicken roasted a delicate brown. Mind you, he had all this stuff in a pair cf staddle bags in the wilds of the liocky Mountains, 390 miles from civili zation, in the year lb'3G. It made me sick, but 1 resolved that the poor girl should have cue good feed it I died for it. So I shoved in anothc: paragiaph like this, completing tbe bill ol fare: -Alter getting the girl started Zske reached into the saddle bag and pulled out a bowl of steaming hot consomme and a broiled fresh, mackerel, seme deviled crabs, cold slaw, potato salad, a half fry, veal cutlets breaded, witb tomato sauce, rreen corn oa the cob, some clam chowder, stewed turkey, a portion ot rice puuuiag, two cups ot choco late, pork tenderloin. Kocuefort cheese, and a bottle of Bass' ale, Saratoga chips, a plate ot vanilla ice cream, a Chinese paper napkia, sliced cucumbers, some California grapes and a nickie plated nut cracker. " "Did it go?'' asked an iaterested listener. "No, it didn't,' said the printer, sadly, '-but I did." The boss cme to nic next morning with a proof slip and wanted to know who was writing tbat ttory. I said the author was makiag a stagger in that direction, but wasn't giving tbe girl a fair show. " 'That may be,' said the boss, 'but if he wants to rnn a caie in connection with tbe story we'll hire a cook and make it easier for you." ' "Then be told me tbat I was too smart te he a printer, and had net ter go out where the cool air would strike me. I went." riles! riles: Pile: Dr William's Indian Pile Ointment is the only sure cure for blind, bleed ing or itching piles ever discovered. It never fails to cure old cases of long standing.
