The claim that these needless disasters are dispensations of Providence, beyond human control, has grown threadbare from long use." Two recent accidents in this vicinity, while they point to no real negli gence on the part of officials, loudly proclaim the fact that stock should be fenced away from the track, and that s a matter that should be looked after. The colored democratic voters of Tennessee are appealing to the I colored race in the south to divide their vtite, maintaining that to be the panacea needed. T' Although thrifty saving is to be commended and industry leads to happiness, the accumulation of wealth just for the sake of hoard ing it is not conducive of the best part of life. M. Maurice says that the chase for selfish happiness is alwa ys melancholy. History shows its folly ; experience daily confirms the fact that it is impossible to secure peace or comfort in mean ness. , Property is like water or air it grows stagnant without circula tion, and is deadly. Our best 111-i hcritance from our parents is skill , culture, prudence, economy, tem perance, and humane sentiments. Even. our schools have failed to prepare us for content. They have, till now, only increased our ability to comprehend and enlarged our range of want9. They begin at last to fit us with skilled hands, as well as cultured senses olid brains. The chief need of the poor is not more property, but more skill and more wisdom in utilization. The absolute poverty of riches is con stantly illustrated ia the history of hoarders and misers.
