the killing and mangling of the
passengers. The man should be
secured and punished if there ia
any way of reaching him. The
claim that these needless disasters
are dispensations of Providence,
beyond human control, has grown
threadbare from long use." Two
recent accidents in this vicinity,
while they point to no real negli
gence on the part of officials,
loudly proclaim the fact that stock
should be fenced away from the
track, and that s a matter that
should be looked after.
The colored democratic voters of
Tennessee are appealing to the I
colored race in the south to divide
their vtite, maintaining that to be
the panacea needed. They had
better do a little missionary work
and induce a division of the rotes
of the white population of therouth
sis a preliminary to their great
panacea.

the Eifel tower a mile high, says
"Architects say it can be done. 1
That will settle the question; trie

a habit of doing anything as soon
as it is settled that it is within the

Although thrifty saving is to be
commended and industry leads to
happiness, the accumulation of
wealth just for the sake of hoard
ing it is not conducive of the best
part of life. M. Maurice says that
the chase for selfish happiness is
alwa ys melancholy. History shows
its folly ; experience daily confirms
the fact that it is impossible to
secure peace or comfort in mean

it grows stagnant without circula

culture, prudence, economy, tem

Even. our schools have failed to
prepare us for content. They have,
till now, only increased our ability
to comprehend and enlarged our
range of want9. They begin at
last to fit us with skilled hands, as
well as cultured senses olid brains.
The chief need of the poor is not
more property, but more skill and
more wisdom in utilization. The
absolute poverty of riches is con
stantly illustrated ia the history of
hoarders and misers. Is any man
on earth so utterly poverty-ridden
as one who has lost friends, lost t
