Ernest Aus.in, secretary and acting superintendent of the" Geld Mountain and Dry Gulch Con solidated Gold and Silver Mining Company, arrived in town yester day and ordered of Deyoe ii Rob son a complete saw-mill with engine, boiler, etc., for use at the company's mines at Quartzville, this county, where work is now being rapidly pushed by the com pany. It is a well known fact that this company has the most exten sive mines of any company on the coast and also the richest, which speaks well ior this county. The company owns all the placer mines of Dry Gulch, consisting of about :?00 acres, besides six of as rich quart mines as there are to be found. The company is organ ized on a basis wherein all htock holders have an equal show, ac cording to tho money in vested. and need not fear asH'Ssments as t lie stock is absolutely non-assessatiie, and is made paid up on the pay ment of $10 per share, (.-hares being of the par vahw of $-"-0 each. ) That being the estimated amount necessary per share to thoroughly develop the company's mines and can be either paid at once or in instalments of 1 per month. As souie gentlemen remarked who bad purchased stock in the com pany. "It is considered by us U- be better than investing in real estate." Mr. J. M. Kogers anived hist evening from Salem for the ourpose of placing some el" the company's stock i n the market, and it wiil Le to every one's ad vantage tinuncially, should they have the opportunity, to purchase all the company's slock ihey can possibly handle. Should you see .Mr. Kogers don't fail to take some stock, as the development of these mines is of vast importaf.ee to us all. Wumea as flail C arriers. The Polk county papers are loudly boasting of their women mail carriers. They say Miss Ethel Uose carries the mail from Airlie to Lewisville, a distance of six miles, Miss Chapin, from Dallas to Syracuse, a distance of six miles. That is a good record, but over in Tillamook county there is a woman mail carrier who goes them twenty live miles better and has served her country by being the mother of nine children besides. This woman is Mrs. Tage, and she carries a semi-weekly maii between Nes kowin on Nestucea beach, and the store at Grand Kondc, a distance of thirty miles. Her route lies over a mountainous country in which are many steep grades and dark passes, but she braves the wintry winds, and delivers tbe mail on time. In the summer when the roads are good, she travels in a light vehicle, but dur ing tbe rainy season she goes on horse. ac k. SCHOOL KEFOIIT. The following is a report of the Orleans school district, No. for month ending September '11, 188H: Number of pupils enrolled 17; number days attendance -11 ; days absence 4:1, (nearly all caused by siikncss., Average deportment 07',.. Those excelling in butli scholar ship and deportment were .Mina Yates, Loyd Millh-jlb-n, May lieadr.ck, Kay Hanks aiul l'eshna Iawe-, tbe first named standing the highest. Tiiose excelling in scholarship alone were. Mart P.ert hil.l, Joe r.lnunberg, and Pird Croft, and in deiortaient alone were Klva Millhollen and Charlie Dow. The pupils have all done well. They have made good progress in their studies, and the best of humor has prevailed on the play ground. If the children always do as well and try to lu'lp make their school pleasant, this will soon be one f the most pleasant schools in the state. The interest of the pupils would be increased if the parents and otiicers of tbe school would take more interest and visit it. Lacka E. Williams, Teacher. KK.ENE MITES. Ei oknk, Oct. ". At ." :!."! he said "lei her go." The balloon rose about 100 feet then gradually descended, alighting on a brick building one and half blocks from starting point. The failure is ow ing to the Eugene's illiberality in raising the required $30. An old soldier by the name of Turpen departed this life to-day while having his leg amputated.
