U. lecturer is now speaking at different points in this county, and w ill reach Albany "ii Monday, the 30th inst. She will give - in address at the W. C. T. C hall at 3 r. M., to which all are invited, and especially the ladies who desire to know more of the work of both the national and iocal unions.'- Her evening lecture will be well worth the hearing of all thinking people. She has re cently done good work in Washing ton territory and meets" with gen eral favor 'wherever she speaks, this being her second vieit to this coast. The foreign markets certainly jus tify" this assertion. England will need to import 144,000,000 bushels during the next twelve months, and the Ku-sian grain cropi are disappointing. Russia last year sent most of her grain to the Luro ;can market. This year she will nave to buy back her own grain' at ;n increased price. The price of ats in Aibanv is 25 to 30 cents. He arrived in this city yester day morning from lloseburg and spent the forenoon in visiting prin cipal points of interest about the city and conversing with promin ent citizens concerning matters of inter.-.- to this portion of Oregon. IK- expressed himself as both surprised aud delighted with the indications of growth and prosperi ty and the material progress made in building and improvements since his last visit two years ai:o. "These fine brick buildings, electric lights, the street cars rushing to and fro," he said, "give Albany a decided metro politan appearance, and your busi nes men inform me that the vol ume of business is increasing in a corresponding rate to the growth of tbe city.-' "Albany's important lailroad om.'ifotioiis contribute much to htr prosperity, and it is r.eedicss to speak of the rich country tribu t.iry to the city, as the wealth and value of old Linn county is well known abroad. Edgenton Hogg, p esident of the Oregon Pacil C railroad, would probably arrive in this city within a short lime. Ii is now learned definitely that he is on his way here in company with a party of Kew York capitalists, and will arrive in Corvallia op Fri day, whete a public reception Will be tendered the party, a meeting of citizens having been called by the mayor for that purpose. It is t-.aid by those in a position to know that the men in company with Col. Hcgg are capitalists who have recently invested large'y in the road, and are coming out to see something of the wonderful im provements being made along the route of the road. "The Oregon Pacific company is all right," said a well posted rail road man to a Hkhald reporter yesterday. "Another year," he said, "will witness the establishment of car and machine shops of no small dimensions in Albany, and the headquarters of the company will be removed to Alb Any and con tracts let for completing the road across Eastern Oregon and on to Boise City." j Nor is this opinion at all vision- j ary. It is known now that the Or egon Pacific is on a sound financial basis, and ahile. like all great un- j dertakings, the work ot building ! the road eastward has progressed ! slowlv, it has been moving steadily ! forward toward such a connection. It is believed that the coining of Col. Hogg will !e a signal for more rapid and active work in this' direction. Tne Colonel and party will probably arrive in Albany the last of the week.
