One of the most unaccountable j phases of the human m.nd is the Veadiness with which new, untried and impossible theories are taken up and adopted. The more impos sible and higbllown the theories are the more numerous and enthus jastie their followers appear to be. One of these high soundingtheories that is now being spiead out before the American farmers with all the j winning sophistry that enthuiastic J star gazing dreamers can invent is j the so called single tax theory. Of .it the Husbandman, one of the leading grange papers very truth fully says : There is danger to day, as there was yesterday, and will be to-morrow, in every alliance that in any degree causes the grange to lose it identity. At this moment there is systematic design to tie the grange to the vagary of a single land tax. In a covert way, good men have been wheedled into ac ceptance of the fallacy that good would come from placing all taxes on land. Hut is it not passing Strang;; that any farmer should imbibe a notion at variance with his own experiences? There can be but one explanation : that is in the fascination of winning speech that gained its melodies in the' wweets of Utopia. Farmers in the . .. t 'PI., ;- mam are verv practical men. llieir - capital is in land that yields profit t.i labor nnlv throii'h intelligent i use, and never in such large meas ure that a considerable portion 'nay be spared for governmental uses without the following of real hardship. They complain, justly, too, that there is discrimination against their holdings in all tax levies. How can they find relief in acceptance of a farther burden? The rery idea is absurd. It is like matins black appear white by the intervention of a spotless screen thrust in by delicate art to inter cept vision and deceive the be holder. The device may be ap proved by men who have nothing to lose by its successful employ ment, but it is amazing that any farmer can be so deceived.
