THE The varied usea to which the art o" photography is applied is in creasing constantly. Mr. Champ ney says they can hardly be told. Its value in u'ustration is well known to all. Hera it has helped popularize artistic work, and chepen the cost of its production to a surprising exteut. Now but a few hours may pass before the thought of the artist is made the joy of the reader, drawing, photo graphic copy, relief plate and print ing following one another with nineteenth-century speed. From the coarse outline of the newspaper "cut" to the wonderful reproduc tion of paintings by the photograv ure process we mount on stepping stones of victorious achievements in photography, made to serve with reliable accuracy the common and the elevated, the political cartoon and the edition de luxe. The uses of which science ha9 put photography are very numerous, from records of the infinitely little to the infinitely great, from micro scopy, whicii deals with the invisi ble, to the vastnes3 ot astronomical wonders. The latest contributions to our knowledge of the sun, moon and stars made by photographs taken by the aid of the powerful telescope at the Lick Observatory strongly contrast with the re searches into the invisible world of nature revealed through the microscope. Dr. Draper made the first daguerreotype of the moon in 1840 ; Foucault of Paris first suc ceeded in making a picture of the sun in 1845 ; and it was 1830 before Professor Bond, of Harvard college mad) the first daguerreotype of a star. In 1851 Dr. Busch, of Koen isberg, photograpked a solar eclipse. Two scientists. Professor Schuster and Mr. Lockyer, in 1SS2 obtained a photograph of the spec trum of the eclipsed c.un. In 1S81 Dr. Henry Draper had successfully photographed a nebula, and later the spectrum of a star. Even the aurora borealis has been photo graphed this yeai. In the study of stars by this precedure we learn kowsome are like our sun, others glowing matses of matter just be ginning to burn, and still others nearlv burnt out, like and Aldebaran. found to be too small, and the total is now estimated at from 485,000, 000 to 500,000,000 bushels. A re cent estimate of increase and of decreased quantities of wheat grown this year compared with that last year is as follows: Increases United States, 82,000,000; Canada, 8,000,000; England and France, 32,000,000; and in Ital, Spain, Belgium, Holland and Algeria, 32.000,000 bushels ; total, 154,000,- 000. Decreases liussia. 72,000, 000; Hungary, 30,000,000; Kouma nia, 8,000,000 ; Germany, 8,000,000 ; India, 18,000,000, and in Argentine j Republic, Australia and Lhile, 24,000,000 bushels; total, ICO.OOO. 000 buskels. This, if verified, will point to a deci eased output of about 12,000,000 bushels in the countiics named, which, if true, should be constructed, taking the year through, in favor of the United j States, as they have grown overj 80,000,000 bushels more whea-, than a year ajio and at leat 45,000,000 more for export, even 'after supplying all deficiencies in reserve?. The growth and importance i f electrical mechanical appliances is ! remarkable in its extent. It is j said that at the close of the past year there were completed and in course of const! uction in this coun- j try eighty-five electric railways, comprising about four hundred and fifty miles of track, and the reports show that during the first year over eighteen millions of passeng-'.
