Brownson, president of the McMinnville ct liege, is in the city, and a ill occupy the pul pit at the Baptist church on Sun day, morning and evening. Miss Jennie llollenbeck, who' has been visiting at the residencet of her uncle, J. W. Cusick, in thi city, went to Salem yesterday and will spent a few days visiting with the family of Dr. Cflsick before re turning to her home in Illinois. War 0r Water. Last Thursday evening a lot of Ieople owning property in the town of old La Grande, repaired to the roservoir of the city water works and demolished it in . a very few moments, says the Weston Ledger. They then began tearing out the pipe, blowing out fire plugs and in nhort, disable tne entire system. ; This action on the part of the citi-' zens is to be commended, since the ! wntr-r romnanv had the cheek to come iu and steal their water right carrying the water through the city in pipe to the near town, and absolutely robbing them of their drinking water. In addition i to the papers mentioned as being represented in the report sent yes terday, on arriving at Newport t Lie Northwest Farmer, of Portland, the Oregon Treacher, of Albany, and several other papers were found represented. Arrangements had been made by the citizens to give free passage on the steamer to and frm Ya qulna, and on the Ferry to South Beach and return, and teans secured to give free transportation to points of interest, including the famous Seal Rocks. Also a dance and free banquet on Friday even ing. Tne band from Toledo was engaged for the occasion and came down with the train. Certainly Newport people have prepared most liberally for the oc casion, and the prospects are that a most enjoyable time will be spent. Much work has been laid out for the Association, and from the prospects at this writing considerable wil. be accomplished thatwill redound to the benelit of ' the editorial iraternnv in uregou. Salem, Aug. 1'3. Rev. DeWitt Talmage, the noted divine ol Brook lyn, arrived in Salem to-day and lectured this evening to a large audience. A number of people were present from Albany and other places. The great preacher has changed wonderfully within the pastfe years, and is beginning to look rather stout and aged servitor Mitchell, who lias been in the capital city for a dav or two, ! returned to-dav to Portland His visit at Salem has revived the talk of who will be appointed United Mat marshal of Oregon, Marion county has two candidates, Messrs. S. marshalship appointment will not be settled until after the reassembling of con- gress. Frank Kitchen, a workman on the woolen mills fell from the sec ond story yesterday, striking noon his head on the joists in the has His wounds were dressed by Pr. M. H.
