Crandall left at this office yesterday some liue specimens o: Oregon peaches. They were grawn at his residence in "this city, and are superiar in size, color and flavor to the yellowest, rosiest peaches from California. The condition of Nick Zimmer man, who was snot two weeks ago by Bernard Wensen, remains un changed. His chances of recovery are slight, but baring survived so long, his attending physician, Dr. M. II. F.llis, has gained hopes of pulling him through. Mr. McNary's place, in Polk county, which "was burnt ver from a spark from the engine of the rail road, is being appraised by a party of six gentlemen. lie will be paid one dollar per rod lor alt fence de stroyed and be allowed CO bushels of wheat to the acre on all that was burnt over. There is no better opening on the Pacific Coast for a wholesale and jobbing grocery or dry goods busi ness than in Albany. This city possesses transportation facilities by which goods can be laid down as cheap here as in any city in Or egon. A small jobbing business is already being done here, and with the building of the Oregon Pacific eastward will come a gen eral wholesale business in Albany. In this connection it might be stated that daring the present season about 25,000 pounds of wool has been hauled across the moun tains in wagons to this city, for which 19 cents per pound was paid, against 1A cents paid in The Dalles, which shows the decided advantage of the market here. The same is true of grain ship ments, and thj great volrune of business done over the Yaquina route is due to the fact tbat Albany leads in the price of wheat. The difference Ul freight charges be tween Albany pud Portland irom San Francisco is in favor of this city. The government engineers assure vs that within twelve mouths :) feet ot water wid be oo tained at the entrance at Yaquina, which will admit of the entrance of deep sra ve.-.sei. Tills places Al bany in direct communication with the seabyard by I ho idiortest roule from San F.'anciseo, and will make this city a natural distributing point over 'he outho'ii Pacific a.:d Ore-ou IV.cili - lines, and th? rivfr. Tor n wi.io territory. Theye i;.::.-;M ;.-i:io:i facilities, together with the natural advan tages of Albany, is b?innihg to attract the attention of capita'i.-ts. A gentleman cf mea-.s, who has tiaveled through nearly every slate in the union stated to a Hke ai.d reporter vcstvdav, that in ad dition to the newly established w( olen mills and other enterprises now on foot, it was his belief that the near future would witness the opening of several who.'seJe and jobbing houses. This he said is no idle tale, but the natural conse quence of the advantageous situa tion of Albany in the center of the Willamette Valley, and in posses sion of important railroad connec tions and shipping facilities. Etc. iwn by NEWi'or.r, Aug. 10. We hare just returned from an encounter with the briny deep, and having laid aside the bathing suit for ordinary habiliments, wo are sunn'ng ourselves, turtle like, and derote a litt'e time to the columns of the Daily Herald. A few days s;nce you pointed a tew notes on Newport and its surroundings. Would it be of interest to yoi'r readers to know how pleasure-seekers pass the time here? This sub ject may be likened to the sermon of lifty years ago, which comprised itstenthly andtwentiethly. Varied indeed are the ways in which the t'me is occupied. There are a few general objects of interest which every one must visit. Tne light house, Seal rock, Otter lock, the wreck of the Yaquina Bay and the cave above Nile creek. With the exceotiun o'. Seal rock and Otter rock these plact-s may Vie seen by the average pedestrian. Sestl rock is on South Beach and Otter rock seven miles beyond the !'ght house. The teamster uses four hoies in driving to Otter rock. The Yaquina Bay is jammed against the jetty oil ."outh Beach. It iias certainly been a staunch vessel but is now suffering the violence of wind and wave. F.very isi! or carries away a trophy, and the ship 'acks many an oaken board, cedar slick and spike., liven hei u,:er deck is minus the heavy duck, which comptises the carpet. I'.at we must pass on. The aver age visitor hero leels a fcort of duty in M.eiiigthe above mentioned objects and the first few days are conscientiously devoted to laom. The bathing is an everyday oc currence. The major pArt oi the people bathe i.t Newport and iSile creek. May we stp for a minute to censire the dressing rooms at Newport. Of all the com u;it less, sloppy, coiivenientless, towellcss, crowded places where people pay for the privilege of donning bath ing suits and dressing, these are the worst, not a hook to hangclola- ing on, no heat jor me t iiiueu bather, nothinr but a four by six room where S'x and seven peo .U crowd m water and dirt, there's ;':i:i in a bath. Beach strolls never lose their attractions. Each outgoing tide bares the rt ;ks to the curiosity seeker and exhibits fctar-lish, mussels, shells, stones, mosses and various kinds oi animal life peculiar to the s.ea. .Mr. Seth McAlister of Albany, find Mr. McClure of Eugene, captured a rock cod and a sure enough devil fish this week at low tide. The former was good, the latter, to say the least, well named. We have heard of hydra-headed things, but never saw a hydra-tailed before. Fishing in the bay offers its at tractions. Perch are plentiful and easily caught. Deep sea lishing is largely carried on and many people iudrlge in it. The Mischief takes her parties orer the bar until all are seasick. Little sailboats spend three hours on the bay with com panies at 25 cents a person. But these amusements are of a general character, l'arties of young people go up the beach and take lunch. One of the ioliiest crowds we have seen was one made up of Salem ities, Albanians and ttie "Eugene crowd." It indulged in a tally pull on the beach, and with good j candy, a big bonfire, plenty of j music, vocal and instrumental, the j young men and m.adens pa.-v d j tue first half of the night. Tlr e candy pullings are fuil of niiri'i ! and jollity. ! Sand mountain is a rare play-; ground. From the summit, the broad ocean is neon. One f-id? is quite steep and it is a never end-: ing piece inn for the beys and j girls to roll down. Indeed, we J know of an Albany lady of dignity j who slid down one evening in ical giou. Aiieie is one sa,nsiaciioii m ; iue si.-a coast. every one Knows ; everyone, and all people are placed ; on a par. There is no distinction I between high, low, rich, aristo crat or non aristocrat. There is a splendid exhibit from Linn, Lane, Polk and Benton counties, furnished by parties from those counties that comprise a great rariety oi the finest speci mens grown in those counties of their agricultural and horticultural product?. Downs' Station, on the Narrow Gauge about three miles from Sil verton, was the scene ot a consid erable conflagration last Thursday night. The wheat warehouse of James Downs by some means took tire and burned to the ground, de spite the eflorts of the people to save it. The loss will be quite heavy, as the warehouse was full of wheat, both old an new. It is im possible to give thex:xaet a:ount oi the loss or the origin of the fire. The fire was discovered at about 9 y. in, and the building was a smou'dering ruin in a very shoit time. Latei:. it is since learned that a second warehouse adjoining that of Mr. Downs' and owned by C. N. .-cott oi the Narrow (iuage was al so hr.rnud at the fame time.
