P. lleiden, who resides southwest of Denieon several miles, brought to the city his little ch:ld Hallie te be treated tor a cnake bite. About 0 o'clock the little girl left the house with a pail on her arm to gather wild blackberries near what is called Stone spring. The child was expected to return home in a few moments, as the family was to leave early to pass the day with a neighbor. The child being absent something over . an hour, Mrs. Hidden proceeded to the spring. The child was not there. and the mother called her name loudly several times. Receiving no response she lei t the spriug and walked into the blackberry patch to hunt up the child. Passing through the patch she saw a scene which made her scream and almost faint in horror. The child was seated on a rock, aud curled in her lap was a large rattle snake. The '-child was carressing the su.ike, whose her.d wuvslightly elevated and moving to and fro. Sometimes the snake's head would almost touch the lips of the child, who pushed it away without ap pearing to anger the snake. The child was so completely under the spell of the serpent that it paid no attention to the mother, who screamed so loud that her iuitmod heard her a quarter of a mile dis taut and hutiied to tiiesccue. When Mr. lleddeu appeared the suake oiaced itself in tin attitude of butt'c and the air almost seemed to vibrate with the noise of the rattler. Mr. lleddeu advanced upon the snake, tin: child lei! back as if in a swoon, and the make struck it on the thumb of the right hand, and then sprang at Ilcdcien, who killed It with a rock, lleddeu sucked the wound, wiiich he is con fident saved the life tfhisiittle girl. Saleratus was also applied to the wouud. The hand aud arm of the little girl were 'out very littie swollen when brought to the city for treatment. The child states that she was sitting on the rock picking berries when the snake ap pearad, and that she was unable to move when she looked at it; that she was not afraid of it; that when H wared its head to and fro iu her face, she telt like going to sleep. riles! rile: riles! Avoid countiy hotels ni farmhouses. The true oath to enjoyment is to get a party of three or four, hire a tent, load yourselves like pavkmul:s with bedding, frying fans and a shotgun aud . o som where. The further you get away from home the better you will enjoy yourself. You have taken your gun along, aud some day y.u suceeed in shooting a couple of chipmunks and a sparrow, perhaps. You don't know how to dress them, though, and about one-. quarter of the flesh is wasted ia the process. It is easy enough to cook them. Put them into a pot of water, throw iu some sale and let them boil. By and by the llesh boils off the bones, and then y u regret not hav ing studied up on this matter of cook ing. If one is really hungry the chancer are that he will have to walk two or three miles to procure a piut of milk and a few eggs from some farmers' wife. Kggs are a food pe culiarly fit for the camper out, in that everybody knows how to cook them. But the best way is to beat them all up together and scramble them. You proceed to break them, one by one, in a tin dipper, daubing your bands and clothing liberally in the opera tion. The last one is stale, and you suddenly decide you 'do not care for eggs that day. With average camp ing luck there will be a smart shower every day, clearing off soon enough for your traps to dry before the next one comes along to wet them again. Here is an' extract from a letter written in camp, which will illustrate some of the beauties of the life: "Howard and Dick have gone of' gunning, or trying to gun; Joe is out side the tent, bnsy about something, and I have the first peaceful moment I have had since we came here. This is real fun. We are having an im mense time. Rain for four dsys, but it is lovely this morning. I wish you conl-.i see the bushes about here just now. Kvery one presents some picturesque appearance, covered as they are with overcoats, rubber and woolen blankets drying in the sun. lam barefooted, waiting for one of my three pairs of shoes to dry. THE TEItltlTOKIF.S. They Will Be Well Treated by the Administration. Washington, July 13. Secre tary Noble, iu an iuteiview with Delegate Carey tf Wyoming Terri tory, to -day said that the policy of the Administration would be broad and iiberd toward the Territories; that land whrj tiiere were no ey.dences of minerals should be sent to patent; tJiat person" who settled u: on public lands or pur chased lauds in good faith should have their evidences of title; that this was his policy aud that Acting Commissioner Stone was ic actor J with him. Who Burned Bllonftburg? Tacaraa Led ire r. - E. T. Wilson of Ellensburg, in peaking of the fire, said : "The ore which on Ihursday night destroyed the entire business portion of Fjliensburg, with one or two email exceptions, is still at this moment a matter of mystery. Maay think it the act ot an incendiary; others the wrk of an Indian squaw who bad been outraged by some white man and sought to obtain re venge by firing the town. Still others, by tramps or vagrants who had recently been infesting tbo city. "To strengthen this last idea several reputable citizens stated en the morning after the fire that they bad found in their yards a red card on which bad been wiitten in ink the words, You have no pity we thow no mercy.' "There is another supposition, however, but as it involves the standing and position of one who was burned out, yet heayily in sured, I do net feel warranted in telling you upon whom this sus picion bas been directed. Investi gations are now on foot, and if this party is found guilty, or indeed if any one is apprehended who set the city on fire, he will be most rigidly dealt with." Kleetrte Blllrrn. The Salmon Fishing Industsy on the Alaskan Coast. WASHINGTON NEWS NOTK. rae New 8oon-tc-Be States Women a Boldiors io Hayti Joba L. Sullivan Still Dodging tbe Officers. The USUAL Special Dispatches .J Washington, July 13. The sec retary of the treasury lias received a letter from the collector of cus toms at Sitka, Alaska, in regard to the salmon fishing in that territory in which he suggests that inas much as there are over 40 fishing and canning corporations actively engaged in catching and preparing salmon for market to be distrib uted over a large area, that he bo authorized to visit such portions of territory to see that the laws for the protection of those fish be properly respected. He bas been informed that his request cannot be granted because of lack of ap propriations out of which his ex penses would be paid. It seems that while congress passed an act for the protection of the salmofa fisheries of Alaska and to prevent the unauthorized killing of fur bearing animals in Alaskan waters, it made no appropriation for carry ing out such objects. Commander Schley returned this morning from Philadelphia, where he had gone to accompany the new steel cruiser, "Baltimore," on her first trip at sea. He is in a high state of satisfaction at the action of the new craft that he will command as soon as she is put in the com mission. He calls her a magnifi cent ship, and says she will be the most formidable vessel afloat when fully equipped and armed. Tke trial was a complete success. The vessel was taken outside and was run through a heavy swell. She was unequipped, and her guns were not compensated for by extra weight. Everything worked beau tifully, pointing to a complete ful fillment of the contract require ments. MOKE KNC.I.ISII CAPITAL. Nine Million Dollar Invested iu Iron Works at Cleveland, Ohio.
